‘Our Team Consists of True Leaders in Their Respective Academic Disciplines
The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

International N5 Symposium ‘Neural Networks and Nonlinearity in Nizhny Novgorod Brings Together Scientists from Russia and Serbia
The International N5 Symposium ‘Neural Networks and Nonlinearity in Nizhny Novgorod’ was held at the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists from September 23 to 26. The event was organised by HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod House of Scientists, with the participation of Sberbank and the Institute of Physics Belgrade. The symposium was held for the second time: the first conference took place in 2025 and attracted considerable interest from the academic community.

Electron Heating by Magnetic Pumping and Whistler-mode Waves
Viktor A. Frantsuzov, Artemyev A., Shi X. et al., Astrophysical Journal 2024 Vol. 963 No. 1 Article 16
The investigation of mechanisms responsible for the heating of cold solar wind electrons around the Earth’s bow shock is an important problem in heliospheric plasma physics because such heating is vitally required to run the shock drift acceleration at the bow shock. The prospective mechanism for electron heating is magnetic pumping, which considers electron adiabatic ...

The Dynamics of XUV Plasma Emission in a Low-Inductance Vacuum Spark at the Initial Stage of Discharge Development
Анциферов П. С., Степанов Л. В., Матюхин Н. Д., Plasma Physics Reports 2024 Vol. 50 No. 6 P. 742–748
The emission dynamics of a vacuum spark with a peak current of ~50 kA in the wavelength range of λ = 5–40 nm is analyzed. The radiation was detected by means of the microchannel-plate detectors with a frame temporal resolution of 20 ns. The technique of simultaneous acquisition of the spatial distribution and spectrograms of ...

Using HPC infrastructures for deep learning applications in fusion research
Ferreira D., Joffrin E., Abduallev S. et al., Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion 2021 Vol. 63 No. 8 Article 084006
In the fusion community, the use of high performance computing (HPC) has been mostly dominated by heavy-duty plasma simulations, such as those based on particle-in-cell and gyrokinetic codes. However, there has been a growing interest in applying machine learning for knowledge discovery on top of large amounts of experimental data collected from fusion devices. In ...

Enhanced performance in fusion plasmas through turbulence suppression by megaelectronvolt ions
Mazzi S., Garcia J., Zarzoso D. et al., Nature Physics 2022 Vol. 18 No. 7 P. 776–782
Alpha particles with energies on the order of megaelectronvolts will be the main source of plasma heating in future magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Instead of heating fuel ions, most of the energy of alpha particles is transferred to electrons in the plasma. Furthermore, alpha particles can also excite Alfvénic instabilities, which were previously considered to ...

Disruption prediction with artificial intelligence techniques in tokamak plasmas
Vega J., Murari A., Dormido-Canto S. et al., Nature Physics 2022 No. 18 P. 741–750
In nuclear fusion reactors, plasmas are heated to very high temperatures of more than 100 million kelvin and, in so-called tokamaks, they are confined by magnetic fields in the shape of a torus. Light nuclei, such as deuterium and tritium, undergo a fusion reaction that releases energy, making fusion a promising option for a sustainable ...

Electron magnetosonic waves and sub-ion magnetic holes in the magnetotail plasma
Shustov P., Artemyev A., Volokitin A. et al., Physics of Plasmas 2022 Vol. 29 No. 012902 P. 1–10
Recent observations of hot plasma in Earth's magnetotail and magnetosheath demonstrate nonlinear sub-ion scale magnetic holes, spatially localized dips of magnetic field intensity. These structures resemble magnetosonic solitary waves, but do not include any significant density perturbations. Instead, the magnetic field depression is balanced by hot electron pressure. This study aims to investigate linear modes ...

Monte Carlo simulation of negative ion kinetics in air plasmas in a time-varying electric field
Ponomarev A., Aleksandrov N. L., Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics 2020 Vol. 53 No. 5 Article 055203
The kinetics of  and O− ions was addressed in air plasma in a rapidly time-varying electric field that is typical for nanosecond pulsed surface dielectric barrier discharges. Self-consistent sets of cross-sections for these ions in collisions with O2 and N2 molecules were developed. The Monte Carlo technique was used to calculate ion energy distribution, mean ion energy and reaction ...

Maevsky E., Кислов Р. А., Малова Х. В. et al., Cosmic Research 2018 Vol. 56 No. 6 P. 411–419
Abstract—Within the axisymmetric MHD model of the solar wind, the magnetic field of the Sun has been analyzed in two phases of the solar cycle: the minimum activity, when the dipole magnetic field dominates and the maximum activity, when the quadrupole field predominates. It has been shown that during the period of maximum solar activity, ...

A steady plasma state reached in the course of charging of an absorbing spherical body is found using computational methods. Numerical simulations provide complete information on this process, thereby allowing one to find the spatiotemporal dependences of the physical quantities and observe the kinetic phenomena accompanying the formation of stable electron and ion distributions in ...
