Создание экономики замкнутого цикла с пластиком и без него: стратегический вызов для компании «СИБУР»

The teaching case can be used for the in-depth study of circular economy principles by university students. The case allows to analyze the implementation of CE principles in SIBUR’s activities. The case reveals the concept of “circular economy”, considers areas and models of CE principles application, determinants of SIBUR’s transition to CE, specificities of CE development in Russia. The case of SIBUR, whose main activity is associated with the processing of oil products into polymeric materials, allows to discuss the issues related to opportunities, limitations, reasonableness and prospects of introducing and development of CE. The case describes the challenges faced by petrochemical companies — the anti-plastic trend, on the one hand, and the uniqueness of plastic as a lightweight, recyclable material, on the other hand. The work pays great attention not only to global trends in the field of processing, the introduction of the principles of a circular economy, but also to the institutional features of the development of this sphere in Russia. The case can be used on different levels within the courses on strategic management, business modeling, supply chain management and sustainable development. The solutions proposed by students can be devoted both to the current situation in the company and in the external environment, as well as to the future periods of the development of the sphere, considering trends.
