HSE Economists Use Search Queries to Forecast Birth Rates
Researchers from the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences have shown that the accuracy of birth rate forecasts for Russia can be improved by almost 50% by incorporating the dynamics of online search queries related to pregnancy and childbirth into forecasting models. In the best-performing models, the forecasting error fell from 4.6% to 3.2%. The findings have been published in Populations and Economics.

HSE Researchers Discover Who Eats Out in Russia-And Why
Around one-third of Russians (31.3%) rarely eat out or buy ready-made meals. The core group of active consumers—those who eat out or purchase prepared food almost every day or several times a week—accounts for only about 9% of the population. These are the findings of a study conducted by the HSE Institute for Social Policy. According to the researchers eating out is no longer a marker of high social status in Russia.

Mirkin B., Parinov A., Автоматика и телемеханика 2024 № 3 С. 6–22
This paper reports of theoretical and computational results related to an original concept of consensus clustering involving what we call the projective distance between partitions. This distance is defined as the squared difference between a partition incidence matrix and its image over the orthogonal projection in the linear space spanning the other partition incidence matrix. ...

Optimizing connectivity-driven brain parcellation using ensemble clustering
Kurmukov A., Mussabaeva A., Denisova Y. et al., Brain Connectivity 2020 Vol. 10 No. 4 P. 183–194
This work addresses the problem of constructing a unified, topologically optimal connectivity-based brain atlas. The proposed approach aggregates an ensemble partition from individual parcellations without label agreement, providing a balance between sufficiently flexible individual parcellations and intuitive representation of the average topological structure of the connectome. The methods exploit a previously proposed dense connectivity representation, ...

The paper covers mathematical and heuristic approaches for solution the image restoration problem. Attention is paid to the least squares method, least absolute deviations, Tikhonov regularization, total variation, Wiener and Kalman filters, as well as matched filter. A description of a new method for constructing the maximum likelihood estimate is given. Such heuristic approaches as ...

Weight and time recursions in dynamic state estimation problem with mixed-norm cost function
Akimov P. A., Matasov A. I., IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control 2015 Vol. 60 No. 4 P. 1050–1063
The mixed-norm cost functions arise in many applied optimization problems. As an important example, we consider the state estimation problem for a linear dynamic system under a nonclassical assumption that some entries of state vector admit jumps in their trajectories. The estimation problem is solved by means of mixed l1/l2-norm approximation. This approach combines the ...

In the article the methods of processing of statistical data about periodic process by the least squares method with usage of Bessel functions and Fourie numbers are analyzed. The simple method for approximation with a choice of the fluctuation period, proceeding from a minimum of the estimated error is offered. ...

A Lattice-based Consensus Clustering Algorithm
А., Gnatyshak D. V., Ignatov D. I. et al., , in: CLA 2016: Proceedings of the Thirteenth International Conference on Concept Lattices and Their Applications. CEUR Workshop ProceedingsVol. 1624.: M.: Higher School of Economics, National Research University, 2016. P. 45–56.
We propose a new algorithm for consensus clustering, FCA-Consensus, based on Formal Concept Analysis. As the input, the algorithm takes T partitions of a certain set of objects obtained by k-means algorithm after T runs from different initialisations. The resulting consensus partition is extracted from an antichain of the concept lattice built on a formal ...

Hedging is one of the most popular strategies for market risk management. Hedging is aimed at decreasing the volatility, or variability, of portfolio returns. The portfolio usually consists of the spot assets and hedging instruments. The latter can be represented by futures, options and over-the-counter assets such as forwards and swaps. While futures’ hedging is ...

The heatwave of July-August 2010 with an escort of noticeable air pollution (including smoke from peat fires) greatly affected the lives and health of the metropolis' residents. That is easily confirmed by mortality data and information about daily emergency calls. During this period strong peak may be observed both on general graphs and on particular ...

Summary and semi-average similarity criteria for individual clusters
Mirkin B., , in: Models, Algorithms, and Technologies for Network AnalysisVol. 59.: NY: Springer, 2013. P. 101–126.
There exists much prejudice against the within-cluster summary similarity criterion which supposedly leads to collecting all the entities in one cluster. This is not so if the similarity matrix is pre-processed by subtraction of ``noise'', of which two ways, the uniform and modularity, are mentioned in the paper. Another criterion under consideration is the semi-average ...
