Discovering Science through Russian Language: HSE Prep Year Students Present at International Conference in Kazan
On May 23, 2026, the V International Scientific and Practical Conference ‘Discovering the World of Science’ took place in Kazan at the Preparatory Faculty for International Students of Kazan Federal University. Four students of the HSE International Preparatory Year took part in the event: two delivered their presentations in person, while two participated online. Their work was supervised by Acting Director of the International Prep Year Irina Isaeva and lecturer Ekaterina Kozhemyakova.

HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

'The Humanities Serve as a Conscience'
Maria Mizernaia studies Soviet literature and the history of book publishing. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, she discusses plans to publish a novel about besieged Leningrad, AI-provoked reflections on what it means to be human, and how novels can help satisfy our dopamine hunger.

Gravity Wave Activity in the Martian Atmosphere at Altitudes 20-160 km From ACS/TGO Occultation Measurements

JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH-PLANETS. 2021. Vol. 126. No. 8. Article e2021JE006899.
Starichenko E., Belyaev Denis A.

The paper presents observations of gravity wave-induced temperature disturbances in the Martian atmosphere obtained with the mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometer, a channel of the Atmospheric Chemistry Suite instrument on board the Trace Gas Orbiter (ACS/TGO). Solar occultation measurements of a CO2 absorption band at 2.7 mu m were used for retrieving density and temperature profiles between heights of 20 and 160 km with vertical resolution sufficient for deriving small-scale structures associated with gravity waves. Several techniques for distinguishing disturbances from the background temperature have been explored and compared. Instantaneous temperature profiles, amplitudes of wave packets and potential energy have been determined. Horizontal momentum fluxes and associated wave drag have been estimated. The analyzed data set of 144 profiles encompasses the measurements made over the second half of Martian Year 34, from the Solar longitude 165 degrees through 355 degrees. We observe enhanced gravity wave dissipation/breaking in the mesopause region of 100-130 km. Our analysis shows no direct correlation between the wave amplitude and Brunt-Vaisala frequency. It may indicate that convective instability may not be the main mechanism limiting gravity wave growth in the middle atmosphere of Mars.

Belyaev D. A., JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH-PLANETS 2022 Vol. 127 No. 10 Article e2022JE007286
Temperature and density in the upper Martian atmosphere, above similar to 100 km, are key diagnostic parameters to study processes of the species' escape, investigate the impact of solar activity, model the atmospheric circulation, and plan spacecraft descent or aerobraking maneuvers. In this paper, we report vertical profiling of carbon dioxide (CO2) density and temperature ...

Revealing a High Water Abundance in the Upper Mesosphere of Mars With ACS Onboard TGO
Belyaev D. A., Geophysical Research Letters 2021 Vol. 48 No. 10 Article e2021GL093411
We present the first water vapor profiles encompassing the upper mesosphere of Mars, 100–120 km, far exceeding the maximum altitudes where remote sensing has been able to observe water to date. Our results are based on solar occultation measurements by Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). The observed wavelength range ...

Dust and dusty plasma effects in Schumann resonances on Mars: Comparison with Earth
Izvekova Y. N., Popel S. I., Izvekov O. Y., Icarus 2022 Vol. 371 Article 114717
Dust and dusty plasma play significant role in the atmosphere and ionosphere of Mars. Electrification in dust events such as dust devils and dust storms can presumably lead to electric fields large enough for discharges to take place and for existence of oscillations in the Schumann cavity. We discuss the role of dust and dusty ...
