The article concerns the history of studying the Soviet modernism architecture after the
dissolution of the Soviet Union; it analyzes the current approaches, issues and lacunae in
research methods, looking at the need to study and describe the “management apparatus” that
oversaw construction and architecture during the USSR’s final decades while also highlighting
the need to develop a system of tools that would enable researches to better understand the kind
of relations the former “center” and the former “peripheral regions” had and investigate the
possibility of using postcolonial optics in further studies of the topic.
