Названия месяцев различных календарных систем в эфиопской рукописной традиции
The Ethiopians have up to now used their own calendar, typical of the
Christians of this country. It was borrowed from the Copts and consists of twelve months
and additional days. The names of these months are invariably used in historical and
hagiological texts in Geʽez and, later, in Amharic in order to indicate dates. However,
the names of the months of other countries and nations also occur in the manuscript
tradition. As a rule, they are represented as lists in codices that were used as references.
This article studies the ideas of late medieval Ethiopian Christians about calendars
of certain nations and about the names of their months and draws on the two pieces
of evidence found in manuscripts. Particular attention is paid to the order in which the
authors arranged the months in their lists as well as to the transcription of foreign terms
in the Ethiopian script, which has allowed us to get an impression about Ethiopian
scribes’ awareness of calendars of other nations and cultures.
