Personal Interest in Doctoral Thesis Topic Most Important for Confidence in Successful Defence
A researcher at HSE University analysed data on 1,539 doctoral students from 161 Russian universities to identify which features of a thesis topic are associated with academic success and engagement. The most important factor was found to be personal interest in the research topic, which was associated with almost all key aspects of doctoral programme experience—from engaging with the academic supervisor to research activity and confidence about successfully defending the thesis. The findings have been published in Higher Education.

Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

‘Dual-reference’ method for high-precision infrared measurement of leaf surface temperature under field conditions

New Phytologist. 2021. Vol. 232. No. 6. P. 2535–2546.
Muller J., Rotenberg E., Fyodor Tatarinov, Vishnevetsky I., Dingjan T., Kribus A., Yakir D.

Temperature is a key control over biological activities from the cellular to the ecosystem
scales. However, direct, high-precision measurements of surface temperature of small objects,
such as leaves, under field conditions with large variations in ambient conditions remain rare.
Contact methods, such as thermocouples, are prone to large errors. The use of noncontact
remote-sensing methods, such as thermal infrared measurements, provides an ideal solution,
but their accuracy has been low (c. 2°C) owing to the necessity for corrections for material
emissivity and fluctuations in background radiation Lbg.
A novel ‘dual-reference’ method was developed to increase the accuracy of infrared
needle-leaf surface temperature measurements in the field. It accounts for variations in Lbg
and corrects for the systematic camera offset using two reference plates.
We accurately captured surface temperature and leaf-to-air temperature differences of
needle-leaves in a forest ecosystem with large diurnal and seasonal temperature fluctuations
with an uncertainty of  0.23°C and  0.28°C, respectively.
Routine high-precision leaf temperature measurements even under harsh field conditions,
such as demonstrated here, opens the way for investigating a wide range of leaf-scale processes and their dynamics.

Assessment of the influence of building parameters on the urban heat island in the districts of Moscow
Le M. T., Bakaeva N. V., Construction Materials and Products 2024 Vol. 7 No. 5 Article 10
Large cities, as financial centres, attract a dense adult population, leading to a high demand for housing. This growth requires urban expansion and increased building density, which disrupts the ecosystem and gives rise to a concentrated urban heat island (UHI). In a study conducted in Moscow, a numerical climate simulation model was used to explore ...

Spanish broom Production Chain Improvement with a View to Sustainable Development
Pavel Malyzhenkov, Chidichimo G., La Torre C. et al., Fibers 2025 Vol. 13 No. 5 Article 14
The extraction of Spanish broom fibers presents significant commercial opportunities. However, the traditional production process is associated with a high environmental impact and considerable waste. This work demonstrates how to address the limitations of alkaline maceration by employing a natural maceration process. This innovative method not only reduces environmental harm but also facilitates the extraction of large quantities of pectin ...
