This book presents several translations of Japanese manuscripts of the 18th-19th centuries about the Ainu, a people who have lived in Hokkaido, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. In the second half of the 19th century, the Ainu lands were divided between the Japanese and Russian Empires, and the ages-old culture and traditional way of life of these people disappeared soon after. Thus, these manuscripts have preserved valuable information about history, culture, customs and life of the Ainu. The book also tells about the secretary of the Russian Geographical Society Alexander Grigoriev, who collected this priceless collection in Japan in 1879-1880, and about the history of relations between the Japanese and the Ainu.
