The paper examines the extent to which the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is able to play a role independent of the great powers and assesses the prospects for ASEAN cooperation on maritime security. Despite geopolitical shifts and Washington’s strategic focus on China’s containment, ASEAN remains the primary mechanism for multilateral, region-wide political dialogue aimed at resolving existing security challenges. ASEAN Regional Forum’s (ARF) should be seen as an extension of ASEAN’s fundamental principles and practices, determining its own course and increasing its influence as a leading driver of regional cooperation. В статье рассматривается вопрос о том, в какой степени Ассоциация государств Юго-Восточной Азии (АСЕАН) способна проводить самостоятельную политику, независимую от великих держав, и оцениваются перспективы сотрудничества АСЕАН в области морской безопасности. Несмотря на геополитические сдвиги и стратегию США на сдерживание Китая, АСЕАН остается основным механизмом многостороннего общерегионального политического диалога для урегулирования существующих вызовов безопасности.
