Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

С. 249–257.
Snetkov I.
In press

In this article, the author proposes a neurophilosophical approach to the construction of a phenomenological model of consciousness. The author considers this approach on the example of the concept of "I-model" of the modern German philosopher of consciousness T. Metzinger. The idea is put forward that an integral part of consciousness is a model of the surrounding world and of itself, including the image of its body, and the conscious experience of "I am I" appears in view of the transparency of most of the I-model in the brain. The author concludes that consciousness is a situationally constructed model created by the brain.

A few years ago, an illusionist theory of consciousness appeared in the philosophy of consciousness. It makes an unexpected statement – there is actually no phenomenal consciousness, it is illusory. This illusion is created introspective distortion of physical processes in the brain, which seem to us to have special phenomenal properties. However, an equally strong form of ...

Snetkov I., Вопросы философии 2024 № 1 С. 76–87
The article analyzes the existing naturalistic approach to the problem of free will. This approach identifies itself as “neurophilosophical”. It is argued that neuroscience is necessary to formulate an empirically grounded and conceptually complete notion of “free will”. It is shown that the neurophilosophical position on free will is inconsistent with theories that advocate both ...

Free Will and (In)determinism in the Brain: A Case for Naturalized Philosophy
Vervoort L., Blusiewicz T., Theoria: Revista de Teoria, Historia y Fundamentos de la Ciencia 2020 Vol. 35 No. 3 P. 345–364
In this article we study the question of free will from an interdisciplinary angle, drawing on philosophy, neurobiology and physics. We start by reviewing relevant neurobiological findings on the functioning of the brain, notably as presented in (Koch 2009); we assess these against the physics of (in)determinism. These biophysics findings seem to indicate that neuronal ...

The CMT Model of Free Will

We propose a compatibilist theory of free will in the tradition of naturalized philosophy that attempts to: 1) provide a synthesis of a variety of well-known theories, capable of addressing problems of the latter; 2) account for the fact that free will comes in degrees; and 3) interface with neurobiology. We argue that free will ...
