The article contains a historical and legal analysis of interaction between Batu, ruler of the Jochid Ulus (Golden Horde), and authorities of the Seljuk Sultanate in the 1240–1250s. The author examines specific features of relation of the Golden Horde ruler with sultans and high officials of the Seljuk state. The special attention is paid to Batu’s activity on solving the problems of Seljuks in their internal policy as well as in relations with Mongol authorities of Iran who also pretended to have a control over this vassal state. The study of legal aspects of these relations allows us to clarify to a certain extent some details of the status of Batu himself and specific features of constructing relation between the Mongol Empire and its vassals in different regions during the examined period, when the imperial administrative system was forming. The author analyzed medieval sources (works of Turkic, Persian, Syrian authors of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries) and research works of modern scholars on the history of Sekljuk Sultanate, especially during the Mongol period.
