The paper discusses current issues of source studies in Dagestan related to the so-called customary law, namely Arabic documents and normative texts known under the name of ‘adat or legal custom that was practiced in Muslim courts of village confederacies in the pre-colonial times to assist and clarify general norms the Shari‘a justice though in fact it happened even to contradict it. It serves a historical legal comment to the article of Michael Kemper about ‘adat agreements and books published below in this volume of Kavkazski sbornik.
