Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

Low-rank tensor approximation of singularly perturbed boundary value problems in one dimension

Calcolo. 2022. Article 2.
Marcati C., Rakhuba M., Ulander J. .

We derive rank bounds on the quantized tensor train (QTT) compressed approximation of singularly perturbed reaction diffusion boundary value problems in one dimension. Specifically, we show that, independently of the scale of the singular perturbation parameter, a numerical solution with accuracy 0 < 𝜀 < 1 can be represented in the QTT format with a number of parameters that depends only polylogarithmically on 𝜀. In other words, QTT-compressed solutions converge exponentially fast to the exact solution, with respect to a root of the number of parameters. We also verify the rank bound estimates numerically and overcome known stability issues of the QTT-based solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) by adapting a preconditioning strategy to obtain stable schemes at all scales. We find, therefore, that the QTT-based strategy is a rapidly converging algorithm for the solution of singularly perturbed PDEs, which does not require prior knowledge on the scale of the singular perturbation and on the shape of the boundary layers.

Linear dependencies, polynomial factors in the Duke–Erdős forbidden sunflower problem
Kupavskii A., Noskov F., Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 2026 Vol. 14 Article 124
We call a family of $s$ sets $\{F_1, \ldots, F_s\}$ a sunflower with $s$ petals if, for any distinct $i, j \in [s]$, one has $F_i \cap F_j = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$. The set $C = \cap_{u = 1}^s F_u$ is called the {\it core} of the sunflower. It is a classical result of ...

Reliable Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) evaluation requires propagation models that represent terrain and multilevel infrastructure. Most integrated vehicular simulators still rely on planar models, but the magnitude of the resulting bias is unclear. This study quantitatively compares flattened two-dimensional (2D) and terrain-aware three-dimensional (3D) variants of three scenarios using identical Sionna RT settings. Modulational Instability and Wave Dynamics in the Rotated Modified Gardner–Whitham Equation

This article concerns the study of modulational instability in the rotated-modified Gardner–Whitham (rmGW) equation. This model incorporates both quadratic and cubic nonlinearities, similarly to the Gardner equation, while also retaining the fully dispersive character of the Whitham equation together with a large-scale dispersive term analogous to that in the Ostrovsky equation. Using a classical multiple-scale asymptotic expansion, we ...

Automated Ranking of Soybean Plots from Close-Range RGB Video via Depth Filtering and Point-Based Counting
Groshev Maksim, Rybakov Petr, Teterin N. et al., Sensors 2026 Article 6171
Manual assessment of soybean yield components, such as pod number, is laborious, time-consuming, and subjective. Existing computer-vision approaches based on object detection or instance segmentation perform poorly on close-range RGB imagery of soybean canopies due to severe occlusions, ambiguous plant boundaries, and the high cost of bounding-box annotation. To address these challenges, we propose a ...

Quantized Tensor FEM for Multiscale Problems: Diffusion Problems in Two and Three Dimensions
Kazeev V., Oseledets I., Maxim V. Rakhuba et al., Multiscale Modeling and Simulation 2022 Vol. 20 No. 3 P. 893–935
Homogenization in terms of multiscale limits transforms a multiscale problem with 𝑛+1n+1 asymptotically separated microscales posed on a physical domain 𝐷⊂ℝ𝑑D⊂Rd into a one-scale problem posed on a product domain of dimension (𝑛+1)𝑑(n+1)d by introducing 𝑛n so-called fast variables. This procedure allows one to convert 𝑛+1n+1 scales in 𝑑d physical dimensions into a single-scale structure in (𝑛+1)𝑑(n+1)ddimensions. We prove here that both the original, physical multiscale problem and ...

Automatic differentiation for Riemannian optimization on low-rank matrix and tensor-train manifolds
Novikov A., Rakhuba M., Oseledets I., SIAM Journal of Scientific Computing 2022 Vol. 44 No. 2 P. A843–A869
In scientific computing and machine learning applications, matrices and more general multidimensional arrays (tensors) can often be approximated with the help of low-rank decompositions. Since matrices and tensors of fixed rank form smooth Riemannian manifolds, one of the popular tools for finding low-rank approximations is to use Riemannian optimization. Nevertheless, efficient implementation of Riemannian gradients ...

О ТТ-рангах приближенных тензоризаций некоторых гладких функций
Высоцкий Л. И., Журнал вычислительной математики и математической физики 2021 Т. 61 № 5 С. 776–786
Tensorizations of functions are studied, that is, tensors with elements 𝐴(𝑖1,…,𝑖𝑑)=𝑓(𝑥(𝑖1,…,𝑖𝑑)) 𝐴(𝑖1,…,𝑖𝑑)=𝑓(𝑥(𝑖1,…,𝑖𝑑)), where 𝑓(𝑥) is some function defined on an interval and {𝑥(𝑖1,…,𝑖𝑑)} is a grid on this interval. For tensors of this type, the problem of approximation by tensors admitting a tensor train (ТТ) decomposition with low ТТ ranks is posed. For the class ...

Высоцкий Л. И., Смирнов А. В., Тыртышников Е. Е., Lobachevskii Journal of Mathematics 2021 Vol. 42 P. 1608–1621
Numerical integration is a classical problem emerging in many fields of science. Multivariate integration cannot be approached with classical methods due to the exponential growth of the number of quadrature nodes. We propose a method to overcome this problem. Tensor-train decomposition of a tensor approximating the integrand is constructed and used to evaluate a multivariate ...

Discretization followed by tensorization (mapping from lowdimensional to high-dimensional data) can be used to construct lowparametric approximations of functions.
