The story "The Secretary's Wife" from the medieval Chinese collection "Extensive Writings About Strange Things" ("Guang yi ji", 8th century) contains several motifs included in the group "Witches' customs" in S. Thompson's index. These motifs are not typical for medieval Chinese narrative prose, but they can coexist in a similar combination in much later European plots (including those belonging to the tale type SUS -832**). The article suggests that the entry in "Extensive Writings About Strange Things" is based on a revision of a Central Asian oral story.
