This book offers readers a cross-sectional analysis of the challenges that European nationalisms pose to liberal democracies, both in historical and current terms. In its historical form, populist nationalism rejected one Nation to defend another, morally superior. In its modern version, populist nationalism calls into question some of the great Western "truths", such as the existence of universal human rights, collective action for international peace, liberal multiculturalism, cosmopolitanism or the supranational action of entities such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe or the European Union, among others.

Can civic nationalism develop in Russia? Russia has never had a nation state built around popular sovereignty. In theory, the concept of nation building may be no less attractive to the Russians than it had been for the citizens of the Eastern European and Baltic countries. However, the citizens of these countries associated the empire that ...

The First World War forced the Russian intelligentsia to rethink its values—values that had been constructed in the 19th century. Distancing itself from pacifism and cultural relativism, it began to search for a moral meaning to the war that broke out in 1914—i.e. to defend the war as morally right and having a higher spiritual ...
