Dostoevsky, Sechenov, and the Reflexes of the Brain: Towards a Stylistic Genealogy of Notes from Underground
Ch. 5. P. 99–117.
In this chapter I will juxtapose Notes from Underground with the most prominent Russian text on physiology produced at the beginning of the 1860s, Ivan Sechenov’s Reflexes of the Brain [Refleksy golovnogo mozga, 1863], to explain how Dostoevsky succeeded in creating not only an influential philosophical text, but also an experimental narrative that expands the capacities of psychological prose.
