The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

Motor imagery training under the control of a brain-computer interface (BCI) facilitates motor recovery after stroke. The efficacy of BCI based on electroencephalography (EEG-BCI) has been confirmed by several meta-analyses, but a more convenient and noise-resistant method of near-infrared spectroscopy in the BCI circuit (NIRS-BCI) has been practically unexamined; comparisons of the two types of ...

Разработка и апробация портативной системы с биологической обратной связью по данным кожно-гальванической реакции для управления психоэмоциональным состоянием
Барыкина А. Н., Бондарчук Е. А., Ivanov I. et al., Теоретическая и экспериментальная психология 2025 Т. 18 № 4 С. 237–256
Background. In the context of a fast-paced lifestyle and high stress levels, assessing and managing psycho-emotional states has become an important task. Traditional methods, such as questionnaires, have limited accuracy due to the subjectivity of data, whereas physiological approaches, including the measurement of galvanic skin response (GSR), provide an objective assessment. However, existing devices for ...

Spikebench: An open benchmark for spike train time-series classification
Lazarevich I., Prokin I., Гуткин Б. С. et al., PLoS Computational Biology 2023 Vol. 19 No. 1 P. 1–18
Modern well-performing approaches to neural decoding are based on machine learning models such as decision tree ensembles and deep neural networks. The wide range of algorithms that can be utilized to learn from neural spike trains, which are essentially time-series data, results in the need for diverse and challenging benchmarks for neural decoding, similar to the ones in the ...

Cortical and autonomic responses during staged Taoist meditation: Two distinct meditation strategies
Volodina M., Smetanin N., Lebedev M. et al., Plos One 2021 Vol. 16 No. 12 Article e0260626
Meditation is a consciousness state associated with specific physiological and neural correlates. Numerous investigations of these correlates reported controversial results which prevented a consistent depiction of the underlying neurophysiological processes. Here we investigated the dynamics of multiple neurophysiological indicators during a staged meditation session. We measured the physiological changes at rest and during the guided Taoist meditation in experienced meditators ...

Transcranial direct current stimulation effects on memory consolidation: timing matters.
Vorobiova Alicia Nunez, Pozdniakov I., Feurra M., eNeuro 2019 Vol. 6 No. 3 P. 1–5
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a promising tool for modulation of learning and memory, allowing to transiently change cortical excitability of specific brain regions with physiological and behavioral outcomes. A detailed exploration of factors that can moderate tDCS effects on episodic long-term memory (LTM) is of high interest due to the clinical potential for ...

Kaplan A. Ya., Krysanova E. U., Kirjanov D. A. et al., Moscow University Biological Sciences Bulletin 2018 Vol. 73 No. 2 P. 92–96
The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of different discriminative features of stimuli in a P300 brain-computer interface paradigm on overall performance and evoked potentials. It has been shown that stimuli sets with a greater number of discriminative features yield better target selection accuracy. Target selection accuracy was significantly higher for the ...

Iscan Z., Nazarova M., Fedele T. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2016 Vol. 10 No. 504 P. 1–11
Inter- and intra-subject variability of the motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to TMS is a well-known phenomenon. Although a possible link between this variability and ongoing brain oscillations was demonstrated, the results of the studies are not consistent with each other. Exploring this topic further is important since the modulation of MEPs provides unique possibility to ...

High-Definition tDCS of Noun and Verb Retrieval in Naming and Lexical Decision
Malyutina S., Den Ouden D., NeuroRegulation 2015 Vol. 2 No. 3 P. 111–125
High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a novel brain stimulation method that has high potential for use in language therapy for speakers with aphasia, due to its safety and focality. This study aimed to obtain foundational data on using HD-tDCS to modulate language processing in healthy speakers. Participants received stimulation either of Broca’s area ...

On the Use of the Terms Anodal and Cathodal in High Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation: A Technical Note
Garnett E., Malyutina S., Datta A. et al., Neuromodulation 2015 Vol. 18 No. 8 P. 705–713
The terms "anodal" and "cathodal" are widely used to describe transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of opposing polarities, often interpreted as excitatory and inhibitory, respectively. However, high-definition tDCS allows for complex electrode configurations that may not be characterized accurately as "anodal" and "cathodal." METHOD: To illustrate challenges to data interpretation that may result from unclarity about the ...

Real time adenosine fluctuations detected with fast-scan cyclic voltammetry in the rat striatum and motor cortex.
Evgeny Blagovechtchenski, Budygin E., Adamah-Biassi E. et al., Journal of Neuroscience Methods 2015 No. 256 P. 56–62
BACKGROUND: Adenosine serves many functions within the CNS, including inhibitory and excitatory control of neurotransmission. The understanding of adenosine dynamics in the brain is of fundamental importance. The goal of the present study was to explore subsecond adenosine fluctuations in the rat brain in vivo. METHOD: Long Evans rats were anesthetized and a carbon fiber electrode was positioned ...

Modern brain mapping – what do we map nowadays?
Nazarova M., Blagovechtchenski Evgeny, Frontiers in Psychiatry 2015 Vol. 6 No. MAY, Article number 89
The problem of functional localization in the brain is one of the most fundamental in neuroscience. For this problem two opposite ideologies: "modular" versus "holistic" nature of the brain also known as "localism" and "holism" have been discussed for a long time (Flourens 1825; Luria 1967). The debate in favor of one or another ideology ...
