The paper, published in the year of the 190th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, which became a foundation for the constitutional development of the country, analyzes its formal and substantive characteristics, determined by the socio-political background of its development, borrowing foreign examples and ideas of its creators. The author pays attention to the place of the Constitution of 1812 in the following political and legal development of Spain, its importance for the development of constitutional ideas and legislation in other countries.
