Ноги, крылья… Главное – хвост! (о прототипах сирен западноевропейского средневековья)
Analysis of possible prototypes for images of medieval sirens has shown that their iconography or its individual elements were borrowed from the artistic cultures of the Ancient East and antiquity. For images of sirens-ornithomorphs, the addition of iconographic types occurs quite quickly on the basis of borrowing ancient Egyptian, North Syrian and Eastern Mediterranean samples. This pattern, which was formed by the VI century BC, became popular in mass art forms of antiquity and survived almost unchanged until the middle Ages. The process of the Genesis of sirens-idiomorph was more complicated and, probably, have assumed, use is not a direct quote, but a creative processing of heterogeneous samples. Among the samples could be iconographic schemes used in images of newts and tritons with a forked tail, Rankenfrau ("sprouting maiden"), winged ichthyomorphs. The supposed Genesis was long and its main stages fall during the Hellenistic period.Analysis of possible prototypes for images of medieval sirens has shown that their iconography or its individual elements were borrowed from the artistic cultures of the Ancient East and antiquity.
