The focus of this book is made on Islam in its country dimension, history and associated legends, the formation of theological and legal schools, religious practices and social networks of Muslim communities from the introduction of Islam on the territory of contemporary Russia to the present day. The comparative and historical narrative approach of the book fits well with the source narrative. Crucial issues of Russia’s Islam are discussed on the original written and oral sources created by the Muslim peoples of the North Caucasus, the Volga-Ural region and Western Siberia, where regional branches the main theological schools – ash‘ari and maturidi, – developed as well as traditional hanafi and shafi‘i religious legal schools, transregional branches of the naqshbandiyya-khalidiyya, qadiriyya and shadhiliyya Sufi brotherhoods.
