Neural Network Maps as a Method for Constructing Mathematical Models
Scientists from HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod and the Institute of Physics Belgrade, Serbia, are jointly exploring the application of machine learning techniques and neural networks to the study of nonlinear dynamics. Natalya Stankevich, Leading Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Topological Methods in Dynamics of the Faculty of Informatics, Mathematics, and Computer Science at HSE University–Nizhny Novgorod, spoke to the HSE News Service about this international project.

HSE Scientists Develop Method to Compress Large Language Models Without Losing Quality
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new compression method for large language models such as GPT and LLaMA that reduces their size by 25–36% without additional training or significant loss of accuracy. This is the first approach to use mathematical transformations—specifically, rotations of model weights—to make models more amenable to compression with structured matrices. The study results have been published in ACL Findings 2025. The code is available on GitHub.

Sensitivity Analysis of Limit Cycles in an Alpha Stirling Engine: A Bifurcation-Theory Approach

SIAM Journal on Applied Dynamical Systems. 2020. Vol. 19. No. 3. P. 1865–1883.
Gromov D., Castanos F.

We study a thermomechanical system comprising an alpha Stirling engine and a flywheel from the perspective of dynamical systems theory. Thermodynamics establishes a static relation between the flywheel's angle and the forces exerted by the two power pistons that constitute the engine. Mechanics, in turn, provides a dynamic relation between the forces and the angle, ultimately leading to a closed dynamical model. We are interested in the different behaviors that the engine displays as the model parameters are varied. The temperature of the hot piston and the mechanical phase between both pistons constitute our bifurcation parameters. Considering that energy conversion in the engine can only take place through cyclic motions, we are particularly interested in the appearance of limit cycles.

Modeling cosolvent effects on solubility in supercritical CO2 using data-driven approaches
Makarov D. M., Kalikin N., Gurikov P. et al., Journal of Supercritical Fluids 2026 Vol. 235 Article 106979
Supercritical CO2 (scCO2 ) is an environmentally friendly solvent, but its low polarity limits the solubility of polar compounds. Cosolvents are commonly used to enhance solvation capability, yet comprehensive datadriven studies are scarce. We compiled the largest dataset to date — 4401 experimental solubility records with 22 cosolvents for 93 nonionic solutes, plus 4855 records ...

Modeling Pruning as a Phase Transition: A Thermodynamic Analysis of Neural Activations
- Р. М., Sergei Koltcov, Surkov A. et al., Computers, Materials and Continua 2026 Vol. 86 No. 3 Article 99
Activation pruning reduces neural network complexity by eliminating low-importance neuron activations, yet identifying the critical pruning threshold—beyond which accuracy rapidly deteriorates—remains computationally expensive and typically requires exhaustive search. We introduce a thermodynamics-inspired framework that treats activation distributions as energy-filtered physical systems and employs the free energy of activations as a principled evaluation metric. Phase-transition–like phenomena ...

The role of surface material properties on the behavior of ionic liquids in nanoconfinement: A critical review and perspective of theory and simulations
Nesterova I., Kondratyuk N., Budkov Y. et al., Advances in Colloid and Interface Science 2025 Vol. 346 Article 103623
Room temperature ionic liquids show great promise as electrolytes in various technological applications, such as energy storage or electrotunable lubrication. These applications are particularly intriguing due to the specific behavior of ionic liquids in nanoconfinement. While previous research has been focused on optimizing the required characteristics through the selection of electrolyte properties, the contribution of ...

A new method for calculating the thermodynamic and physical properties of compounds: Application to Laves phase Fe2Mo
Vasilyev Dmitry, Physica B: Condensed Matter 2021 Vol. 621 No. 15 Article 413307
In this work, a new method of searching a most energetically favorable free energy calculated along different thermal expansion paths of a compound is proposed. This makes it possible to reduce the problem to a one-dimensional case and to consider free energy as having one variable - volume. The method was applied to study the ...

First-Principles Calculations of the Thermal Expansion Path of the Co7Mo6 μ-Phase
Dmitry Vasilyev, Physica Status Solidi (B): Basic Research 2023 Vol. 260 No. 1 Article 2200222
The thermal expansion path is calculated for the Co7Mo6 compound, with the structure of μ-phase, from T = 0 to 1500 K which is below its decomposition temperature. The method allowing to reduce the problem to a 1D case and considering the energy as depending on only one variable, the volume, is used. The thermodynamic properties of Co7Mo6 ...

A thermodynamic model of the REM–NREM sleep cycle
Haeun S., Yurii I., Anatoly K. et al., Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 2025 Vol. 190 Article 115732
Although many models explain the spontaneous alternation between two distinct sleep states, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM), new empirical evidence has accumulated regarding consistent temperature changes during sleep stage transitions in small animals. The temperature dependence of neuro-excitability and low-frequency (≤4 Hz) neuronal activity has also been investigated theoretically and experimentally. ...

A Model of Classical Thermodynamics and Mesoscopic Physics Based on the Notion of Hidden Parameter, Earth Gravitation, and Quasiclassical Asymptotics. II
Maslov V. P., Russian Journal of Mathematical Physics 2017 Vol. 24 No. 4 P. 495–504
This paper presents a new approach to thermodynamics based on two “first principles”: the theory of partitions of integers and Earth gravitation. The self-correlated equation obtained by the author from Gentile statistics is used to describe the effect of accumulation of energy at the moment of passage from the boson branch of the partition to its fermion branch. The ...

Maslov V. P., Russian Journal of Mathematical Physics 2017 Vol. 24 No. 3 P. 354–372
In the paper, a new construction of the theory of partitions of integers is proposed. The author defines entropy as the natural logarithm of the number of partitions of a number M into natural summands with repetitions allowed p(M) and repetitions forbidden q(M). The passage from ln p(M) to lnq(M) through the mesoscopic values M → 0 is ...

Probing Spontaneous Spin Magnetization and Two-Phase State in Two-Dimensional Correlated Electron System
Pudalov V.M., Morgun L., Kuntsevich A.Yu, Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism 2017 Vol. 30 No. 3 P. 783–787
Strongly interacting two-dimensional (2D) carrier system has a tendency to spontaneous spin magnetization and mass divergence. Numerous experiments aimed to reveal these instabilities were not entirely convincing. In particular, spin susceptibility of itinerant electrons, determined from quantum oscillations, remains finite at the critical density of the 2D metal-insulator transition (MIT), n = n (c) . ...

Temperature derivative of the chemical potential and its magnetooscillations in two-dimensional system
Tupikov Y. V., Kuntsevich A., Pudalov V. et al., JETP Letters 2015 Vol. 101 No. 2 P. 125–129
We report the first thermodynamic measurements of the temperature derivative of chemical potential (∂μ/∂T) in two-dimensional (2D) electron systems. In order to test the technique, we have chosen Schottky gated GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunctions and detected experimentally in this 2D system quantum magneto-oscillations of ∂μ/∂T. We also present a Lifshits-Kosevitch type theory for the ∂μ/∂T magneto-oscillations in ...
