‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

Ускользающие читатели: трансформации популярной культуры на русском языке как вызов исследователям литературных практик

Slavic Literatures (ранее - Russian Literature). 2020. Т. 118. № C. С. 1–24.
Samutina N.

This article – which functions as stand-alone analysis but which also allows readers entry into the cluster devoted to pop-cultural literary practices in this volume – highlights the possibilities and perspectives of an approach that puts the reader at the center of research on Russian-language literary practices and texts. The author focuses primarily on texts related to popular culture, but she also reflects on the contemporary reception of Russian classics and new novels. Drawing upon her experiences as researcher of online Russian-language literary communities that focus on fan fiction and manga, Samutina argues for methodologies that combine the underused classic paradigm of ‘Rezeptionsästhetik’ with new research possibilities that follow “real” readers’ traces online and offline. The author proposes Jenkins’ concept of ‘participatory culture’ as a tool that can potentially enrich scholarship on
contemporary readers of Russian-language literature. As examples of such research perspectives Samutina outlines three problems discussed within the framework of participatory cultures’ research: new affective schemes of reading and writing, i.e. the ‘new emotionality’ of popular literatures; the famous problem with ‘treating characters as if they were real people’ in popular reading; and the impact of participatory cultures on the transcultural flows of texts, ideas, and translations.

Uspensky B. A., Русская речь 2026 № 05 С. 84–96
Boris Pasternak’s poem “Before All That There Was Winter” (from the book “My Sister, Life”) is enigmatic in many ways: its content is obscure, its syntax is not always clear, and the boundaries of its metaphors are not obvious. It requires a thorough and detailed analysis of each line. This analysis was carried out by ...

This article presents a novel corpus-based approach to (im)politeness research, grounded in Terkourafi's theory of politeness as conventionalization, which highlights the frequent use of linguistic forms in specific contexts as key to developing politeness meanings. We propose lexical bundles – recurrent multi-word sequences – as a systematic tool for tracking (im)politeness in discourse. To illustrate ...

We use interfaces to disconnect from the situation around us, from the persistent experience of the outside world, from our neighbors. It is this ability of interfaces to legitimize “absence” that is usually overlooked in their analysis, as the emphasis is on concentration, management, and control. In reality, interfaces are not so much pragmatic and ...

Статья посвящена анализу образовательной деятельности университетских музеев России. Актуальность исследования обусловлена противоречием между высоким образовательным потенциалом музеев и фрагментарностью его реализации, а также отсутствием в литературе системного анализа условий интеграции музеев в учебный процесс высшей школы. Несмотря на признание музеев важными центрами сохранения наследия и популяризации науки, вопрос об их реальной включённости в повседневную образовательную жизнь вузов ...
