The article publishes key documents concerning the history of the official establishment of the Free Society of Lovers of Russian Literature in 1817–1818. The present materials from the archive of the Ministry of Public Education (Russian State Historical Archive, f. 733) and the archive of the Free Society (Institute of Russian Literature (the Pushkin House), f. 58) allow reconstructing in detail the circumstances of bureaucratic consideration of the Free Society’s case which involved a number of high-ranked bureaucrats of the Alexandrian reign such as Admiral Alexandre Shishkov, the Minister of Public Education Prince Alexandre Golitsin, and the Minister of the Interior Osip Kozodavlev. The archival documents present a more complete and complex picture of the institutional status of the Free Society which turned out to be closely connected with the state and official cultural institutions.
