‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

L.: Routledge, 2022.

Space Oddity? Praepositi Inscribing Power and Appropriating Cityscapes in Theodosian Constantinople
Avdokhin A., , in: Studies in Byzantine Epigraphy 1Vol. 1.: Turnhout: Brepols Publishers, 2022. P. 25–53.
In this chapter, I discuss an epigraphic monument from early fifth-century Constantinople – a porphyry obelisk set up at a strategic point in the cityscape with a series of Greek versified inscriptions. The inscriptions were commissioned by a praepositus sacri cubiculi, and constitute a forceful, and ingenious, effort by a palatine office-holder, who drew his power ...

The idea of royal charism sometimes took quite paradoxic forms on the Christian East. It was due to the fact that the Christian East was constructed of several cultural and religious clusters, and each of them developed its idea. Syriac world had an ideal model of the true king, and that was Alexander. His image ...

Singers Silently Speaking: Psalmists in Inscriptions from Late Antique Middle Egypt (Bawit)
Avdokhin A., Journal of Early Christian Studies 2021 Vol. 29 No. 4 P. 607–636
Personal agency and social microhistory of hymn-writing and singing in late antiquity have been mostly neglected in the study of Christian liturgy. In this article, I approach the question of social and administrative standing of "singers of psalms" in monastic communities in late antique Egypt through the study of their epigraphic (self-)representation. I focus on ...

Hosidius Geta’s Cento Medea: Vergilian Tragedy or Tragedy against Vergil?
Shumilin M., Vergilius 2015 Vol. 61 P. 131–156
Contemporary scholarship generally reads allusion in Hosidius Geta's second-century AD cento Medea as modeled on the technique of learned allusions, meant to appeal to the reader's sophistication. I suggest an alternative reading of allusion and therefore also of meaning in Medea. The allusive play that we can reliably recognize in Hosidius' Medea is, on my ...
