Sanctions are the most common tool foreign policy coercion today. In today’s context democratic countries have abandoned the use of coercive methods in international politics; in order to take a stand, they use sanctions indicating their dissatisfaction with the policies of other countries. However, political science is replete with the amount of researches demonstrating sanctions inefficiency detrimental effect on both sending and recipient countries.
In addition, modern researchers of the sanction inefficiency do not pay attention to internal factors affect the overall sanction efficiency. This article attempts to eliminate this lacuna. The analysis of internal factors is based on theory of rational choice - as a theoretical framework - statistical analysis, as well as the method of structured, focused comparison. Together, these methods allow for a comprehensive analysis of the sanction inefficiency.
This study is aimed to identify the general trend of sanctions inefficiency caused by the internal factors of the recipient country, which might create a solid theoretical foundation for answering the question: “Why sanctions are not effective, but continue to be used in modern international politics?”
