HSE Researchers Make Aldehydes Perform Dual Function
Chemists from HSE University have discovered a way to carry out a reductive addition reaction without using an external reducing agent. Instead, the required 'resource' is supplied by the aldehyde itself, one of the reaction participants. This approach helps prevent unwanted side reactions, reduces toxicity, and simplifies the production and synthesis of organic molecules, including those used in the manufacture of medicines. The study has been published in Journal of Catalysis.

HSE Scientists Explain Why Findings in Autism Research Differ
Researchers from the Cognitive Health and Intelligence Centre at HSE University conducted the first-ever systematic review of studies on the specifics of emotion-from-motion perception in autism. The review showed that differences found between autistic and non-autistic individuals are largely associated with the experimental design and the types of tasks given to study participants. The review findings have been published in Research in Autism.

‘In Science, You Are Your Own Boss
Polina Nasledskova is interested in identifying gaps in linguistics and topics that have been overlooked by other researchers. In an interview for the  Young Scientists of HSE University project, she spoke about rare ordinal numerals in Nakh-Daghestanian languages, the benefits of knitting for concentration, and the beauty of the Patriarshy Bridge.

FIGURAL INTERSECTION TASK: DATA FROM RUSSIAN CHILDREN

P. 64–65.
Хагабанова Т. Б., Ляшенко А. К., Arsalidou M.

Scholastic performance is related to cognitive abilities. Cognitive abilities improve significantly during childhood and adolescence (Arsalidou, & Im-Bolter, 2017). One way to measure cognitive competence is by assessing the amount of information that children can hold and manipulate in mind, which we refer to as mental-attentional capacity. Within the theory of constructive operators (Pascual-Leone, 1970) mental-attention represents a domain general resource that enables problem solving and serves as the maturational component of working memory (Arsalidou et al., 2010). According to Pascual-Leone & Baillargeon (1994), the capacity of mental attention (M-operator) is limited at every developmental stage by the quantity of separate “chunks” of information, which a child can keep and operate in its own mind simultaneously or the number of schemes that can be picked from one’s repertoire and activated by M-operator all at one time using “mental effort”.

Milani A., Pascual-Leone J., Arsalidou M., Journal of Experimental Child Psychology 2022 Vol. 222 Article 105462
Our ability to understand the world around us hinges on our cognition. Theoretically, children’s abilities improve with age; however, a lively discussion exists on how factors such as task domain, task interference, and task difficulty, as indexed mainly by relevant cues, affect cognitive performance. Practically, cognitive measures take a substantial amount of time to administer, ...

Theoretical and Empirical Criteria for Selecting Cognitive Over-Performers: Data from a Primary School in Moscow.
, in: Advances in Cognitive Research, Artificial Intelligence and Neuroinformatics: Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Cognitive Sciences, Intercognsci-2020, October 10-16, 2020, Moscow, RussiaVol. 1358.: Springer, 2021. P. 29–35.
Cognitive abilities are related to academic performance and professional success. Research shows that about 1–10% of individuals have outstanding cognitive abilities. Critically, theoretical and empirical criteria of assessing cognitive performance are understudied and less well understood. A measure of core cognitive performance is mental attentional capacity that reflects the number of items an individual can ...

Functional MRI study of working memory development in school-aged children
Faber A., Arsalidou M., , in: Творчество в современном мире: человек, общество, технологии: Материалы Всероссийской научной конференции, посвященной 100-летию со дня рождения Я.А. Пономарева.: Институт психологии РАН, 2020. P. 139–139.
Working memory is involved in many cognitive processes, and it is essential in problem solving, manipulating temporary information and decision making. Critically little is known about the brain correlates of working memory capacity in children. In this study we examined brain correlates of working memory with functional neuroimaging in school-aged children. ...

The Constructive Operators of the Working Mind: A Developmental Account of Mental-Attentional Capacity
Arsalidou M., The Russian Journal of Cognitive Science 2019 Vol. 6 No. 2 P. 44–55
Many psychological theories attempt to explain the mechanisms that govern cognition in adults, and fewer theories attempt to explain also how cognitive mechanisms change across development. Even fewer theories provide a brain representation of mechanisms related to cognitive development. One such theory is the Theory of Constructive Operators. In this review, we present key components ...

Mental-attentional capacity and cognitively gifted children in Russia
Ляшенко А. К., Тюленева Т. А., Arsalidou M., , in: Когнитивная наука в Москве: новые исследования. Материалы конференции 19 июня 2019 г.: М.: Буки Веди, 2019. P. 29–34.
The analysis of cognitive competence can predict the level of a child’s develop- ment and, thus, can play an important role in their future academic progress. Although the majority of children show comparable cognitive performance for their age, some children significantly outperform their peers of the same age. Based on the Theory of Constructive Operators ...

Culture fair methods of evaluating cognitive competence.

Cognitive competence is an indicator of future financial and physical well-being. Intelligence tests are a well-established, validated, popular method for assessing cognitive competence. Although these tests survived the test of time in psychological practice and research, they have received several serious criticisms. A main criticism is cultural fairness; because intelligence tests mainly rely on culturally ...

Concious states and brain networks
Arsalidou M., , in: Book of Abstracts: XVI European Congress of Psychology (ECP 2019) (2‒5 July, 2019, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow).: M.: Moscow University Press, 2019. P. 1307–1307.
Attention and consciousness are related. We solve problems by directing attention to them and shift our attention to unrelated thoughts when our mind wonders. These circumstances can represent different conscious states. Research shows that adults activate two distinct brain networks when directing attention to a task (i.e., fronto-parietal or executive network) and when mind wondering ...
