The present article is devoted to an analysis of the grounds for the laic authority‘s supremacy over the clerical one. Those grounds were elaborated in France on the verge of 13–14 cc. in terms of a quarrel between French king and papacy. The research is based on pro-royal publicist tracts of the time, which rhetoric reflects both traditional medieval methods of legitimation and changements, occurring in political thinking at the time.
