‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Photonic engineering providing conditions for direct exciton macroscopic coherence at elevated temperatures
Voronova N., Kurbakov I., Yurii E. Lozovik, , in: Proceedings of SPIE, Volume 10912, Physics and Simulation of Optoelectronic Devices XXVII.: Bellingham: SPIE, 2019. P. 1091205-1–1091205-17.
The possibility to observe a macroscopically coherent state in a gas of two-dimensional direct excitons at temperatures up to tens of Kelvin is described. The dramatic increase of the exciton lifetime allowing effective thermalization is predicted for the o -resonant cavities that strongly suppress exciton recombination. The material systems considered are single GaAs quantum wells of ...

Exciton diamagnetic shifts and spin dynamics in lead halide perovskites under high magnetic fields
Do T. T., Xing J., Liu S. et al., APL Materials 2025 Vol. 13 No. 9 Article 091111
Semiconductor lead halide perovskites have attracted significant attention for various applications. Understanding the impact of material composition on optical properties is essential for optimizing device performance. Here, we performed magneto-optical spectroscopy on high-quality bulk CsPbBr3, MAPbBr3, and MAPbI3 single crystals under magnetic fields of up to 30 T. The results revealed distinctive excitonic responses to the magnetic ...

Two-Dimensional CP3 Monolayer and Its Fluorinated Derivative with Promising Electronic and Optical Properties: A Theoretical Study
Kar M., Sarkar R., Pal S. et al., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2020 Vol. 101 No. 19 P. 195305
In this article, we propose a new two-dimensional CP3 material with distinguished properties from comprehensive first-principles calculations. It has excellent thermal, mechanical, and dynamical stabilities and promise for experimental fabrication. The low cleavage energy (0.57J/m2) implies the plausibility of CP3 single-layer exfoliation from bulk structure. Other than exfoliation, we predict an alternative route to synthesize CP3 monolayer through C atoms doping ...

Tunable Electronic Structure of Two-Dimensional MoX2 (X=S,Se)/SnS2 van der Waals Heterostructures
Kar M., Sarkar R., Pal S. et al., Journal of Physical Chemistry C 2020 Vol. 124 No. 39 P. 21357–21365
Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructures formed by stacking two different 2D materials have gained immense attention as they have the potential to show interesting properties. Herein, we report the detailed electronic structure of recently synthesized MoS2/SnS2 and MoSe2/SnS2 heterostructures obtained through density functional calculations. Our study shows that the MoS2/SnS2 heterostructure has a type-I band alignment with ...

Band Gap Engineering of Cu2ZnGeS4xSe4(1−x) Solid Solutions
Khoroshko V., Pugach N., Stanchik A. et al., The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters 2025 Vol. 16 No. 28 P. 7212–7216
Cu2ZnGeS4xSe4(1−x) (CZGSSe) single crystals were grown by chemical vapor transport (CVT) from synthesized polycrystals using iodine as a transport agent. The elemental analysis showed good agreement with stoichiometry. The values of the band gap of solid solutions are determined from the transmission spectra in the region of the absorption edge, and its concentration dependence, which has a nonlinear quadratic dependence ...

Методы детектирования взрывоопасных концентраций водорода: сравнительный анализ и преимущества оптических сенсоров
Кузьминых И. О., Kuzin A., Флоря И.

K.V. Shein, A.N. Lyubchak, Zharkova E. et al., St. Petersburg Polytechnical University Journal: Physics and Mathematics 2024 Vol. 17 No. 3.2 P. 241–245
Photonic integrated circuits (PIC) represent a promising platform for applications in the field of quantum technologies, such as quantum computing and cryptography. One of the key components for these applications is detectors based on thin superconducting films. Nevertheless, fabricating thin detectors atop a waveguide utilizing conventional superconducting materials acquired through magnetron sputtering presents a multifaceted ...

Tunable valley polarization effect and second-order topological state in monolayer FeClSH
Chen M., Kong X., Xie X. et al., Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics 2023 Vol. 26 No. 4 P. 3285 – 3295
In two-dimensional (2D) materials, breaking the inversion symmetry plays an important role in valleytronics. Ferrovalley (FV) materials can achieve spontaneous valley polarization (VP) without additional modulation due to the magnetic exchange interaction and strong spin–orbit coupling. Using first-principles calculations, we predict a new 2D material, Janus FeClSH, which exhibits a large spontaneous VP. This monolayer ...
