How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Bondarenko G.G., Fisher M. R., Kristya V. I. et al., High Temperature Material Processes 2022 Vol. 26 No. 1 P. 17–32
A model of thermofield electron emission from the metal cathode with a thin insulating film on the surface in gas discharge is developed. It describes the tunneling of electrons from the cathode substrate into the film, their motion in it, and their going out into the discharge volume. Expressions for the film emission efficiency and emission current density ...

Bondarenko G.G., Dubinina M. S., Kristya V. I., Technical Physics 2020 Vol. 65 No. 5 P. 826–831
A model of the electric field enhanced thermal (thermo-field) emission of electrons from the metal cathode substrate into a thin insulating film on its surface is developed. A system of equations for the cathode surface temperature in the arc discharge and the electric field strength in the film, providing the required discharge current density, is formulated. It is ...

Photo-electron emission directly in superfluid helium
Zavyalov V., Pyurbeeva E. B., Khaldeev S., , in: 28th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics.: M.: Faculty of Physics, MSU, 2017. Ch. 012085 P. 1–5.
Despite the fact that electron transport in condensed helium has been studied for over half a century [1], observations of new intriguing effects still appear [2]. Alas, the traditional methods of injecting electrons into condensed helium (radioactive-sources, electrical discharge or field emission) lead to generation of helium ions, recombination of which is accompanied by emergence of a large number ...

Bondarenko G.G., Fisher M. R., Myo T. H. et al., Russian Physics Journal 2019 Vol. 62 No. 1 P. 82–89
A model of the thermo-field electron emission from the metal cathode with a thin insulating surface film at temperatures of 200–400 K is developed. An expression for the film emission efficiency in the gas discharge is obtained. The efficiency is equal to the fraction of electrons emitted into the film from the metal substrate, which enter the discharge ...

Scattering on a rectangular potential barrier in nodal-line Weyl semimetals
D. A. Khokhlov, Rakhmanov A. L., Rozhkov A. V., Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics 2018 Vol. 97 No. 235418 P. 235418-1–235418-8
We investigate single-particle ballistic scattering on a rectangular barrier in the nodal-line Weyl semimetals. Since the system under study has a crystallographic anisotropy, the scattering properties are dependent on mutual orientation of the crystalline axis and the barrier. To account for the anisotropy, we examine two different barrier orientations. It is demonstrated that, for certain ...

Surface processes at the first stage of magnetron cathode Pd-Pd5Ba activation
Gaidar A. I., Bondarenko G.G., Petrov V. S. et al., Vacuum 2018 Vol. 154 P. 333–339
The electron emission of palladium-barium cathodes is highly effective due to the active BaO substance formation of low work function on the cathode surface (2.3 eV). The work function is a universal parameter characterizing the emission capacity of material. The degree of cathode surface coverage with the emissionactive layer and distribution uniformity specificate such important parameters as the ...
