This paper considers the reception of Viktor Turin's documentary "Turksib" (1929) in prewar Japan. By analyzing film reviews published in Japanese periodicals this paper unravels the ways in which Soviet travelogues and documentary cinema influenced Japanese filmmakers and their understanding of cinematic realism.
