‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Дифференцированное объектное маркирование в шугнанском языке
Чистякова Д. Г., Типология морфосинтаксических параметров 2022 Т. 5 № 2 С. 84–100
Many Iranian languages have developed differential object marking (DOM). Since many languages have lost case inflection, special markers were used to mark a direct object. In different Iranian languages, DOM may depend on different factors: specificity hierarchy; tense and aspect or information structure [Windfuhr 2009: 33; Bossong 1985]. In Shughni special marking of an object ...

Mapping Verb Retrieval With nTMS: The Role of Transitivity
Ntemou E., Ohlerth A., Ille S. et al., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2021 Vol. 15 Article 719461
Navigated Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (nTMS) is used to understand the cortical organization of language in preparation for the surgical removal of a brain tumor. Action naming with finite verbs can be employed for that purpose, providing additional information to object naming. However, little research has focused on the properties of the verbs that are used ...

Verb argument structure effects in aphasia are different at single-word versus sentence level
Malyutina S., Zelenkova V., Aphasiology 2020 Vol. 34 No. 4 P. 431–457
Many aphasia assessments and therapies select and/or sequence verbs based on linguistic complexity of their verb argument structure (VAS). However, further empirical testing is needed to fully understand whether and how VAS parameters affect the cognitive difficulty of verb processing in different tasks and contexts. The study investigated whether more linguistically complex VAS universally implies more cognitively difficult verb processing, ...

Verb argument structure in narrative speech: Mining AphasiaBank
Malyutina S., Richardson J., Den Ouden D., Seminars in Speech and Language 2016 Vol. 37 No. 1 P. 34–47
Previous research has found that verb argument structure characteristics (such as the number of participant roles in the situation described by the verb) can facilitate or hinder aphasic language production and comprehension in constrained laboratory tasks. This research needs to be complemented by studies of narrative or unrestricted speech, which can capture the spontaneous selection ...
