Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Scientists Propose Method for More Efficient Resource Use in Machine Learning
An international group of researchers, including mathematicians from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, has provided a theoretical justification for a simple and computationally efficient method of estimating uncertainty in Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). The paper has been published on the scientific preprint server arXiv.org and presented at AISTATS 2026.

Постмодернизм как "ощущение конца"
Pavlov A., Вестник Московского университета. Серия 7: Философия 2019 № 2 С. 55–69
The key thesis of the article is that the epoch, defined by the American Marxist Fredric Jameson as postmodern, can be characterized as a “sense of the end”. And since Jameson himself in his book “Postmodernism, or the cultural logic of late capitalism” does not thoroughly analyze the discussions about the end of history, ideology, ...

К пониманию статуса социального мира (размышление над книгой)
Afanasov N., Вопросы философии 2018 № 4 С. 100–110
The article actualizes the method of historical-philosophical reconstruction, that was applied during the preparation process for publication of archival materials of the second part of the fundamental Gustav Shpet’s work, named "History as a problem of logic". This publication continues the already formed in the last decades practice of introduction into scientific circulation of Russian ...

Эволюция социального в многопользовательских компьютерных играх
Shirokanova A., В кн.: Медиафилософия ХII. Игра или реальность? Опыт исследования компьютерных игр.: СПб.: Фонд развития конфликтологии, 2016. С. 117–134.
This chapter demonstrates that, as online games develop and grow in complexity, the "social" in these games, i.e. all types of interactions based on regularities of human communication, evolves as well. Multiplayer online games fulfil many functions in providing the "role distance" of players, enabling them to learn new social roles, alleviate the alienation of ...

History & Mathematics: Political Demography and Global Ageing
Volgograd: ‘Uchitel’ Publishing House, 2015.
Among different important issues, which are discussed in Political Demography the issue of global ageing becomes more and more pressing every year. It is sufficient to take into account the point that within two forthcoming decades a rapid global increase in the number of retirement-age persons will lead to its doubling within this fairly small ...

Possibilities of Comparison between Biological and Social Macroevolution.
Grinin L. E., Korotayev A., A. V. M., , in: Abstracts. Fifth International Conference «Hierarchy and Power in the History of Civilizations».: [б.и.], 2009. P. 130–131.
The comparison between biological and social macroevolution is a very important (though insufficiently studied) subject, the analysis of which offers new significant possibilities to understand the processes, the trends, mechanisms, and peculiarities of both types of macroevolution. ...

On Similarities between Biological and Social Evolutionary Mechanisms: Mathematical Modeling
Grinin L. E., Korotayev A., Alexander M., Cliodynamics: The Journal of Theoretical 2013 Vol. 4 No. 2
In the first part of this article we survey general similarities and differences between biological and social macroevolution. In the second (and main) part, we consider a concrete mathematical model capable of describing important features of both biological and social macroevolution. In mathematical models of historical macrodynamics, a hyperbolic pattern of world population growth arises ...
