Scientists Develop Algorithm for More Reliable Processors in Data Centres
Researchers from HSE MIEM and Samara University have developed the LRF-3D algorithm to automatically bypass idle nodes in three-dimensional networks-on-chip. Thanks to its hierarchical architecture, the algorithm outperforms existing solutions in both speed and path accuracy, improving processor reliability for use in data centres, supercomputers, and AI computing. The source code and test results are publicly available.

Researchers Develop Method for Direct Generation of Regulatory DNA
Researchers at HSE University have developed a model for generating promoters and enhancers—DNA sequences that regulate gene activity. The model works directly with DNA nucleotides, without first transforming them into a continuous numerical representation. This solution could be useful for applications in synthetic biology and gene therapy. The study results were presented at the ICLR 2026 Workshop ‘Generative AI in Genomics (Gen^2): Barriers and Frontiers.’

Social Integration: At the Crossroads of Knowledge and Values
The International Laboratory for Social Integration Research (ILSIR) at HSE University studies the challenges faced by vulnerable groups and explores ways to help them participate fully in everyday life. To develop effective solutions, the laboratory’s researchers combine cutting-edge methods with practical fieldwork. In this interview with the HSE News Service, Laboratory Head Elena Iarskaia-Smirnova discusses the laboratory’s work.

The importance of student engagement in the learning process is widely recognized during the last years. Engagement has shown positive relationships with various crucial aspects of learning both in traditional and online learning environments. However, there exists a research gap pertaining to engagement in non-formal learning contexts. This paper investigates the students' engagement in STEM learning ...

Facial Expression Recognition with Adaptive Frame Rate based on Multiple Testing Correction
Savchenko A., , in: Proceedings of the 40th International Conference on Machine Learning: Volume 202: International Conference on Machine Learning, 23-29 July 2023, Honolulu, Hawaii, USAVol. 202: International Conference on Machine Learning, 23-29 July 2023, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.: PMLR, 2023. P. 30119–30129.
In this paper, we consider the problem of the high computational complexity of video-based facial expression recognition. A novel sequential procedure is proposed with an adaptive frame rate selection in a short video fragment to speed up decision-making. We automatically adjust the frame rate and process fewer frames with a low frame rate for more ...

Игра на повышение: роль виртуальной валюты в стимулировании выполнения домашних заданий на платформе Skyeng
Adamovich K., Chirkina T., Вопросы образования 2023 № 4 С. 8–24
Even though online learning is an affordable way to gain new knowledge and skills, and millions of people use different platforms, there is a serious problem with students dropping out, as well as with their completion of assignments during training. One effective way to increase student engagement is to use gamification in teaching. In this ...

Classifying emotions and engagement in online learning based on a single facial expression recognition neural network
Savchenko A., Savchenko L., Makarov I., IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing 2022 Vol. 13 No. 4 P. 2132–2143
In this paper, behaviour of students in the e-learning environment is analyzed. The novel pipeline is proposed based on video facial processing. At first, face detection, tracking and clustering techniques are applied to extract the sequences of faces of each student. Next, a single efficient neural network is used to extract emotional features in each ...

Relationship between teaching practices and mathematical processes outcomes in secondary school: based on a longitudinal TIMSS-PISA study
Larina G., Kapuza A., , in: Proceedings of the PME and Yandex Russian conference: Technology and Psychology for Mathematics Education.: M.: SU HSE Publishing House, 2019. P. 278–278.
The competence of mathematical modelling is well conceptualized, thought a much-debated question is how to develop it in schools. International achievement test PISA consider mathematics achievements from the modelling perspective (formulating, employing and interpreting), and provides us with comprehensive data to analyze school factors in math results from the comparative perspective. The goal of our ...

Когнитивные процессы в преподавании: связь с достижениями учащихся в математике
Larina G., Kapuza A., Вопросы образования 2020 Т. 1 № 1 С. 70–96

Teachers’ beliefs about student diversity: exclusive and inclusive models
Larina G., Markina V. M., / Series WP BRP "Basic research program". 2017. No. 43.
This article provides an empirically grounded analysis for two fundamentally different models of math teachers’ beliefs about student diversity in Russian secondary schools: exclusive and inclusive models. Although teachers’ beliefs are considered a central factor for the differentiated approach, teachers’ attitudes could be stereotyped and, consequently, the evaluation of a student’s ability would be systematically ...
