HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

Vote Aggregation Techniques in the Geo-Wiki Crowdsourcing Game: A Case Study

P. 41–50.
Baklanov A., Fritz S., Khachay M., Nurmukhametov O., Salk C., See L., Shchepashchenko D.

The Cropland Capture game (CCG) aims to map cultivated lands using around 170000 satellite images. The contribution of the paper is threefold: (a) we improve the quality of the CCG’s dataset, (b) we benchmark state-of-the-art algorithms designed for an aggregation of votes in a crowdsourcing-like setting and compare the results with machine learning algorithms, (c) we propose an explanation for surprisingly similar accuracy of all examined algorithms. To accomplish (a), we detect image duplicates using the perceptual hash function pHash. In addition, using a blur detection algorithm, we filter out unidentifiable images. In part (c), we suggest that if all workers are accurate, the task assignment in the dataset is highly irregular, then state-of-the-art algorithms perform on a par with Majority Voting. We increase the estimated consistency with expert opinions from 77% to 91% and up to 96% if we restrict our attention to images with more than 9 votes.

The crowd is your ace: Playing FMCG’s internationalization game
Tekic A., Nguen C. M., Business Horizons 2026 Article In Press, Journal Pre-proof
Fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) firms face intense pressure to internationalize, yet the traditional playbook—lengthy R&D cycles, costly market research, and standardized campaigns—often struggles to deliver local relevance at speed. This article argues that crowdsourcing—digitally mediated, large-scale consumer participation—can complement established internationalization tools by mobilizing local knowledge and community endorsement to mitigate key aspects of the ...

On the Use of Metaheuristics of Different Classes and an Island Model for Image Steganography
Anna Melman, Mikhail Alexandrov, Oleg Evsutin, , in: 2025 XIХ International Symposium on Problems of Redundancy in Information and Control Systems (Redundancy), 5-7 Nov. 2025.: IEEE, 2025. P. 1–6.
Digital steganography protects the privacy of data by hiding them in some digital containers, such as images. Protection of confidential messages by hiding them in digital images faces the problem of balancing the main performance indicators, i.e. embedding imperceptibility and capacity. Metaheuristic optimization can be used to flexibly customize embedding options, including parameters and locations ...

Melman A., Evsyutin O., Senyukova O., Компьютерная оптика 2025 Т. 49 № 2 С. 273–281
The widespread use of digital content makes the task of protecting author’s and owner’s rights increasingly important, in particular with regard to digital images. Digital watermarking technology is an effective tool that solves many problems associated with proving authorship of images, verifying authenticity, and tracking illegal copying. An effective watermarking algorithm requires achieving high levels ...

Image watermarking based on a ratio of DCT coefficient sums using a gradient-based optimizer
Anna Melman, Oleg Evsutin, Computers and Electrical Engineering 2024 Vol. 117 Article 109271
Social networks and various websites provide a lot of tools for publishing and sharing digital images. However, publishing digital content online makes it vulnerable to illegal copying and distribution. An effective method for protecting images is watermarking technology, which embeds a logo or some kind of identifier into an image in an invisible way. If ...

Anna Melman, Oleg Evsutin, Danil Smirnov, , in: 2023 XVIII International Symposium Problems of Redundancy in Information and Control Systems (REDUNDANCY).: IEEE, 2023. P. 1–5.
Sharing images via social media and specialized sites creates a copyright issue. Image watermarking methods provide copyright protection for authors and owners of digital content. The security level of a watermarking algorithm depends on a watermark’s resistance to various distorting effects, such as brightness changing, contrast changing, applying a Gaussian filter, and others. At the ...

Watermarking is a widespread technique for information protection and an invisible alternative to quick response codes. The literature mainly considers software implementations of watermarking methods, even though there are applications for which hardware watermarking solutions become preferable or the only possible option due to increased speed, power, or information safety requirements. A convenient, flexible, and ...

Quantifying local and mesoscale drivers of the urban heat island of moscow with reference and crowdsourced observations
Varentsov Mikhail, Fenner D., Meier F. et al., Frontiers in Environmental Science 2021 Vol. 9 Article 716968
Urban climate features, such as the urban heat island (UHI), are determined by various factors characterizing the modifications of the surface by the built environment and human activity. These factors are often attributed to the local spatial scale (hundreds of meters up to several kilometers). Nowadays, more and more urban climate studies utilize the concept ...
