Scientists Discover Why Europium 'Misbehaves'
Europium is a rare-earth metal responsible for the pure red glow in displays and other luminescent materials. For a long time, however, it refused to emit light when surrounded by certain organic molecules known as acylpyrazolone ligands. Chemists have now uncovered the reason: in europium complexes with these ligands, a 'black window' appears—a charge-transfer state in which the energy absorbed by the ligand is dissipated as heat rather than emitted as light. Understanding this mechanism opens the way to designing more efficient red-emitting materials for displays, fluorescent thermometers, and chemical sensors. The results have been published in Dalton Transactions.

HSE Economists Reveal How the Wage Gap Emerges Among Vocational School Graduates
HSE researchers examined the careers of 600,000 graduates of Russian secondary vocational education programmes and found that at the start of their careers, the gender wage gap reaches 23%, doubling after three years. This disparity is largely due to male and female students choosing different occupations when enrolling in vocational schools. These were the findings made by Sergey Roshchin, Natalya Yemelina, and Ksenia Rozhkova from of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences. The article has been published in Educational Studies.

HSE Researchers Make Aldehydes Perform Dual Function
Chemists from HSE University have discovered a way to carry out a reductive addition reaction without using an external reducing agent. Instead, the required 'resource' is supplied by the aldehyde itself, one of the reaction participants. This approach helps prevent unwanted side reactions, reduces toxicity, and simplifies the production and synthesis of organic molecules, including those used in the manufacture of medicines. The study has been published in Journal of Catalysis.

Исследование строения и свойств пленок углеродных и алмазоподобных материалов

С. 256–260.
Налимов С. А., Yurin A.

Experimentally investigated the films of carbon and diamond-like materials (AlN) with an ordered structure of the crystal phase, grown by plasma methods on the substrates of amorphous and crystalline materials in order to form multilayer structures. The influence of technological parameters on the composition, structure and functional characteristics of the layers is studied.

Influence of plasma treatment on the oxygen reduction reaction performance of graphene-based materials
Evlashin S., Fedorov F. S., Chernodoubov D. A. et al., Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry 2024 Vol. 956 Article 118091
Carbon materials are of outstanding interest for use in energy sources. One of the latest achievements in improving their specific characteristics is the doping of carbon materials with various heteroatoms. However, the mechanisms that lead to improved performance remain unexplored. In this study, we investigated the influence of structural defects and incorporated heteroatoms on the ...

Measurement of the Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Nanowalls by the 3ω Method
Chernodubov D. A., Bondareva J., Shibalov M. V. et al., JETP Letters 2023 No. 117 P. 449–455
Carbon nanowall films with different thicknesses have been obtained by chemical deposition from a gas phase in a dc discharge. The thermal conductivity of the resulting structures has been measured for the first time using the 3ω method in the temperature range of 280–310 K. It has been shown that the thermal conductivity of walls ...

Role of Nitrogen and Oxygen in Capacitance Formation of Carbon Nanowalls
Evlashin S., Fedorov F. S., Dyakonov P. V. et al., The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters 2020 Vol. 11 No. 12 P. 4859–4865
Supercapacitors based on carbon nanomaterials are attracting much attention because of their high capacitance enabled by large specific surface area. The introduction of heteroatoms such as N or O enhances the specific capacitance of these materials. However, the mechanisms that lead to the increase in the specific capacitance are not yet well-studied. In this Letter, we ...
