How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

Scientists Train Neural Network to Generate Process Plans from 3D Models
Researchers at the HSE FCS AI and Digital Science Institute have developed CAD2TechSpec, a framework that converts 3D models of mechanical parts into machining process plans—step-by-step instructions for machine tools. The solution aims to reduce the time required for the design and preparation of technical process documentation in mechanical engineering, aircraft manufacturing, and other high-tech industries. The study findings have been published in PeerJ Computer Science.

Fiber Optic Sensor for Precise Detection of the Moment of Passage of Reflective Labels

P. 312–315.
Yury I. Gudkov

This paper analyzes the main factors affecting the accuracy of recording the movement of an object using an amplitude fiber optical sensor with external modulation of the radiation flux is analyzed. The structural scheme, the  operating principle and the algorithm for processing the measuring information of a non-contact infrared sensor for recording the moment of passage of a reflective mark are given. The variants of using the developed sensor in the monitoring systems of technological equipment are considered.

Analysis of Propagation/Leakage transition of fiber cladding modes for processing of data from dielectric tilted fiber Bragg grating sensors
Chubchev E. D., Dolzhenko E. I., K.A. Tomyshev et al., Measurement: Journal of the International Measurement Confederation 2025 Vol. 253 Article 117479
Tilted fiber Bragg gratings (TFBGs) possess promising characteristics for refractometric purposes. However, their complex spectral response containing a large number of features makes the sensor’s output relevance highly dependent on data demodulation and interpretation. We propose a method for processing sensor data based on a detailed analysis of the system’s behavior during the transition of cladding modes from ...

Single quantum emitters detection with amateur CCD: Comparison to a scientific-grade camera
Gritchenko A. S., Eremchev I., Naumov A. et al., Optics and Laser Technology 2021 Vol. 143 Article 107301
Fluorescence imaging of single quantum light emitters (atoms, molecules, quantum dots, color centers in crystals) is an inherent experimental problem of modern photonics and its numerous applications. In these measurements, highly sensitive cameras are of the key significance. Recent progress in technologies of chargecoupling devices (CCD) and complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors opens up possibilities for detection of extreme ...

Shcherbatenko M., Elezov M., Goltsman G. et al., Physical Review A: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical physics 2020 Vol. 101 No. 3 Article 032306
We experimentally demonstrate a quantum receiver based on the Kennedy scheme for discrimination between two phase-modulated weak coherent states. The receiver is assembled entirely from standard fiber-optic elements and operates at a conventional telecom wavelength of 1.55 μm. The local oscillator and the signal are transmitted through different optical fibers, and the displaced signal is ...

Sensing of Surface and Bulk Refractive Index Using Magnetophotonic Crystal with Hybrid Magneto-Optical Response
Ignatyeva D., Kapralov P., Golovko P. et al., Sensors 2021 Vol. 21 No. 6 Article 1984
We propose an all-dielectric magneto-photonic crystal with a hybrid magneto-optical response that allows for the simultaneous measurements of the surface and bulk refractive index of the analyzed substance. The approach is based on two different spectral features of the magnetooptical response corresponding to the resonances in p- and s-polarizations of the incident light. Angular spectra of p-polarized light have ...

Classical and quantum dispersion-free coherent propagation by tailoring multimodal coupling
V.M. Akulin, Physical Review A: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical physics 2019 Vol. 99 No. 2 P. 023849
It is shown that tailored breaking of the translational symmetry through weak scattering in waveguides and optical fibers can control chromatic dispersions of the individual modes at any order; thereby, it overcomes the problem of coherent classical and quantum signal transmission at long distances. The methodology is based on previously developed quantum control techniques and ...

Perspective methods of information transfer in optical communication channels based on the latest achievements of quantum physics are considered. In the near future these methods  can solve both the problem of creating an optical channel conducting with physically unlimited bandwidth, and the problem of secretly transferring information in a fiber-optic information channel. The results of ...

The article describes new method of use after free bug detection using program dynamic analysis. In memory-unsafe programming languages such as C/C++ this class of bugs mainly accurse when program tries to access specific area of dynamically allocated memory that has been already freed.
