Вестник Карачаево-Черкесского государственного университета. 2018. № 44. С. 95-100.
This paper presents a survey of a new project devoted to a typologically-oriented description of Abaza. It discusses the methods used in obtaining the relevant data (an oral corpus on a par with elicitation) and some topics touched upon by the project (phonetics, passive-like constructions, nominal structures, information structure and interrogatives, sentential complementation).

In this article we describe reflexivization strategies in Abaza (Northwest
Caucasian), a polysynthetic language characterized by consistent head
marking and morphological ergativity. Abaza features three reflexivization
strategies: (i) the specialized reflexive prefix čə- used to reflexivize the absolutive argument, (ii) doubling of person-number prefixes, used to reflexivize
indirect objects with transitive verbs, and (iii) the lexical reflexive based on
the ...

This paper deals with the productive morphological causative r(ə)- in Abaza (Northwest Caucasian), a highly polysynthetic ergative language. We discuss the causativization process in Abaza as well as the semantic properties of the construction and elaborate an analysis of the event structure of the Abaza morphological causatives based on the scope of adverbials. ...

This paper describes a group of derivational verbal suffixes in Abaza, a polysynthetic language belonging to the Northwest Caucasian family. For each suffix I propose a short description of its most remarkable features. In particular, I discuss the polysemy of the refactive and assertive markers and their interaction with the event structure of the verb. ...

Kabardian (Northwest Caucasian) displays two associative plural constructions. The first pattern exploits the suffix which is also used for the expression of additive plural: it is added to proper names and normally provides a reference to the family of the focal referent. Within the second pattern, a specific associative plural marker follows a syntactically autonomous ...

This paper describes a pilot experiment which was conducted by the authors with speakers of the polysynthetic West Circassian (Adyghe) language and aimed at investigating their ability to use complex verb forms that cross-reference several arguments introduced by applicative morphology. The results of the experiment support the view that complex polysynthetic words can be constructed ...

West Circassian displays two types of cilitive (facilitive ‘easy’ and difficilitive ‘difficult’) forms, namely noun cilitives, which describe individuals, and secondary cilitives, which describe the state of affairs. Secondary cilitives seemingly originate from noun cilitives, hence the same cilitive suffixes mark forms that are remarkably different from each other in their morphosyntax. While noun cilitives ...

The paper deals with functioning of the analytical additive marker əčʼjə̣ / jəčʼjə̣ in the Temirgoy dialect of West Circassian (also known as Adyghe) and the Kuban dialect of Kabardian and analyses some morphosyntactic parameters, which serve to differentiate its various functions. According to the hypothesis we propose, the marker əčʼjə̣ / jəčʼjə̣ , which ...

This paper discusses the morphological and syntactic means of expression of participants in morphology and syntax of West Circassian (Adyghe) focusing on the argument vs adjunct characteristics of these means. West Circassian provide evidence for the non-discretness of the argument/adjunct contrast but also shows the necessity to distinguish between argument/adjunct properties in morphological expressions and ...

The present paper deals with morphologically bound complementation, a type of constructions where a matrix predicate and the head of its sentential complement constitute a single verb morphologically but retain their syntactic and semantic independence. This type of polypredication is discussed on the material of Abaza (< Northwest Caucasian): I consider a construction with an element ...

Northwest Caucasian languages display a high degree of polysynthesis (manifested in complex words which bear much information on arguments and the characteristics of a situation), prefixes and suffixes, with some morphemes being capable to appear both as prefixes and suffixes, ergative-based cross-reference of core arguments and indirect objects introduced by applicatives, highly developed means of ...

Udi (East Caucasian) possesses several means of expressing the meaning ‘other’, namely (i) the combination of a (usually distal) demonstrative with a numeral (usually ‘one’), arguably calqued from Azerbaijani, (ii) the expression originating from a combination of a demonstrative with the noun ‘arm, side’ and (iii) borrowed adjectives. It is shown that the morphological properties ...
