The history and the content of the concept the west The article is devoted to the study of the lingvocultural concept “the West” which helps to reveal the features of the outlook of different cultures. The authors deal with История развития и наполнение концепта the West // Запад 157 the nucleus and the co-nuclear area of the concept in the English and the American worldviews. The chosen methods such as the associative experiment, contextual, lexicographic and distributional analyses show that the nucleus of the concept is homogeneous and many-sided, but the co-nuclear area is not homogeneous as it has some special connotative, usually negative, meaning. The results of the study show that the concept “the West” is not only used to describe some specific countries, but also all phenomena associated with the concept.
