‘I Would Like My Research to Help Make the World a Calmer and Better Place
Whatever task Saraa Ali, Junior Research Fellow at the Laboratory of Methods for Big Data Analysis (LAMBDA) of the AI and Digital Science Institute (HSE Faculty of Computer Science), is working on, she thinks about how it can benefit people. She told the Young Scientists of HSE University project about her large family, diagnosing three-phase motors, and her dream of building a children’s home in her native country.

‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

‘I Like Self-Fulfilling Prophecies
Andrey Vorchik studies happiness, delivers popular science lectures, and believes that science should address social issues as well. In an interview for the Young Scientists of HSE University project, he spoke about how emotions influence decision-making, the Bermuda Triangle formed by the bathroom, refrigerator, and bed, and the ideal formula for education.

ОЦЕНКА ВЛИЯНИЯ КЛИМАТА НА УДОВЛЕТВОРЕННОСТЬ ЖИЗНЬЮ В ЦЕЛОМ

С. 348–354.
Мкртчян Г. М., Блам И. Ю., Цвелодуб Ю. О.

The paper presents a research on the possible impact of climate change on well-being of Russia’s population. Specifically, it provides numerical estimates of the degree of dependence of subjective well-being valuations on regional climate parameters. As a working hypothesis, it is assumed that subjective happiness estimates recovered via panel surveys reflect rational individual preferences that may be represented by a utility function while the parameters of that function can be estimated using an econometric model. An econometric estimation of the parameter values of a happiness function was conducted using an ordered probit regression model. The model is built on the data provided by the Rosstat statistical agency and the primary data of the Russian Longitude Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE). The results of the regression suggest that the climate factor has a highly significant effect on a respondents’ self-reported life quality valuation, as significant as the impact of other factors such as money income, employment status, health condition, etc. The results may be of interest to the researchers in the field of economic valuation of the consequences of climate change. Also, they present an alternative method to evaluate the efficiency of public policies aimed at the prevention of climate changes.

Kravtsova M., Musaev A. U., Welzel C., / Series "SSRN Working Paper Series". 2026.
Elaborating on Welzel et al.'s "Cool Water Theory," our study zooms into the more limited (albeit still varied) framework conditions of Russia's huge territory. Within Russia's confines, we examine how the combination of moderately cool seasons with steady rain (i.e., Cool Water) affects sub-national areas' contemporary societal progress in two modernization indicators: material prosperity in ...

Удовлетворенность жизнью в период пандемии среди разных доходных групп в России
Scherbak A. N., Petrov I., Вопросы экономики 2025 № 3 С. 115–136

The Sahel Belt: In Search of a ‘Positive Peace’ Formula
Degterev D. A., Russia in Global Affairs 2025 Vol. 23 No. 1 P. 104–122
The Sahel Belt’s contradictions have brought about a multidimensional and lasting security crisis. The conflicts were triggered partly by climate change’s disruption of seasonal pastoral migration in the western Sahel, and partly by the disruption of nomads’ natural symbiosis with sedentary farmers in the south. This has led to the politicization of ethnic and religious ...
