Discovering Old Frisian charters: compounding

In this paper, I aim to introduce a major and yet poorly known lexical segment of the Old Frisian lexicon, namely the lexis found exclusively in Old Frisian charters. As part of a larger research project on compounding in Old Frisian, a notably productive word-building tool that is attested from early on, I will highlight three semantically based groups of compounds that are notably numerous in the charters. These are: (1) the designations of feast days; (2) the designations of coins; (3) names for inhabitants. On the basis of a brief analysis, five morpho-semantic features will be outlined. It is hoped that this paper will draw attention to Old Frisian as a complex language and invite further scholarship on the language heritage.
