‘The Peak of Stupidity and ‘The Valley of Despair: HSE Economists Propose an Explanation for the Dunning–Kruger Effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect, which describes a sharp surge in self-confidence among beginners followed by an equally rapid decline as they gain experience, can be explained by the nature of the learning process and the acquisition of new knowledge. This conclusion was reached by Andrey Vorchik of the HSE Faculty of Economic Sciences together with independent researcher Murat Mamyshev. They developed a mathematical model of learning and demonstrated how subjective confidence is formed and changes as knowledge accumulates, as well as how teachers can reduce the ‘valley of despair’ experienced by learners.

Lečić N. D., Schole.
In this article we analyse the teaching of one of the last Early Pythagoreans, Eurytus of Tarentum, by comparing it with the philosophy of his teacher, Philolaus of Croton. Eurytus is known to us through his performance of “defining” a thing with the number of pebbles needed to draw its silhouette. We strive to find ...

In this paper we analyse the influence of various interpretations of direct and indirect doxographic testimonies concerning Early Pythagoreanism on our understanding of the most fundamental aspects of this movement. This is done through the example of texts giving hints of possible existence of advanced «pebble arithmetics» and number ontology among Early Pythagoreans. The author ...

Lečić N. D., Schole.
This article attempts to reconsider the customary assessment of the performances attributed to one of the last Early Pythagoreans, Eurytus of Tarentum. His practice of «defining» a thing with the number of pebbles needed to draw its silhouette is usually regarded as a naïve or unworthy version of the number philosophy of his teacher, Philolaus ...
