Mathematical Knowledge: Intuition, Visualization, and Understanding
Topoi. 2010. Vol. 29. No. 1. P. 1–2.
Irina S., Horsten L.
According to the orthodox conception, mathematicalknowledge is obtained by a combination of mathematicalintuition and deduction: the truth of the axioms is intui-tively given, and theorems are obtained from axioms bylogical inference. Intuition and deduction are viewed astwo separate modules of mathematical thought, and theycan be studied largely independently of each other. Butthere are reasons why this view has come under increasingpressure.

Audio-visual speech recognition (AVSR) gains increasing attention as an important part of human-machine interaction. However, the publicly available corpora are limited, particularly in driving conditions with prevalent background noise. Research so far has been collected in constrained environments, and thus cannot reflect the true performance of AVSR systems in real-world scenarios. Moreover, data for languages ...

We present an approach to evaluate the robustness of pre-trained vision and language (V&L) models to noise in input data. Given a source image/text, we perturb it using standard computer vision (CV) / natural language processing (NLP) techniques and feed it to a V&L model. To track performance changes, we explore the problem of visual ...

In recent years, researchers have been focusing on a wide range of different constructs to study legitimizing grounds in socio-political relations. Political system justification, social dominance orientation (dominance and anti-egalitarianism) and political conservatism are considered as attitudes containing various grounds for legitimizing the currently existing socio-political relations (status quo). Maintaining these attitudes is associated with ...

This paper presents a novel approach for precise UAV landing using visual sensory data. A new type of fiducial marker called embedded ArUco (e-ArUco) was developed specially for a task of a robust marker detection for a wide range of distances. E-ArUco markers are based on original ArUco markers approach and require only ArUco detection ...

Western culture tends towards panoptical vision of the world where human being (1) occupies the place of a lonely and tragic observer of the “world picture”. Though culture’s relying on visual perspective may be quite efficient in matters of technology, it is not immune to a certain kind of optical illusion, which asserts the essential ...

Decision making in the field of limiting anthropogenic impacts on the climate system, including climate itself, requires the estimates of consequences. The assessment of the confidence of estimates is important for the reliable justification of the decisions, in particular for the risk analysis. Such an approach was developed in scientific reports of the Intergovernmental Panel ...

Legal reasoning in the framework of three basic approaches to law, legal positivism, natural rights’ conception and sociological approach is considered from the viewpoint of logic. Logical validity is argued to serve as a model for legal reasoning and legitimation of legal decision. On basis of D’Amato case I try to show that logical models ...

The article considers the problem of conceptualization of legitimacy. While being one of the fundamental concepts of political analysis, «legitimacy» describes the relationships of power, political order, regime, individual institutions, etc. The article argues for the relevance of studying the practice of decisions, actions, policy legitimation, proves the need to distinguish between «legitimation» and «justification» ...

While the traditional philosophical epistemology stresses the importance of distinguishing knowledge from true beliefs, the formalisation of this distinction with standard logical means turns out to be problematic. In Knowledge Representation (KR) as a Computer Science discipline this crucial distinction is largely neglected. A practical consequence of this neglect is that the existing KR systems ...

When the traditional distinction between a mathematical concept and a mathematical intuition is tested against examples taken from the real history of mathematics one can observe the following interesting phenomena. First, there are multiple examples where concepts and intuitions don’t well fit together; some of these examples can be described as “poorly conceptualised intuitions” while ...

Why Do Mathematicians Need Different Ways to Present Mathematical Objects? The Case of Cayley Graphs
Irina S., Topoi 2010 Vol. 29 No. 1 P. 41–51
This paper investigates the role of pictures in mathematics in the particular case of Cayley graphs—the graphic representations of groups. I shall argue that their principal function in that theory—to provide insight into the abstract structure of groups—is performed employing their visual aspect. I suggest that the application of a visual graph theory in the ...

“Lectures on Justification” were read by John Henry Newman, one of the leaders of the Tractarian movement, in 1837 in Oxford, and then published in 1838. This series of lectures exemplifies Newman’s doctrine of the “via media” of the Anglican Church. According to this doctrine, Anglican Church is supposed to pass between the extremes of ...

Software system Cordiet-FCA is presented, which is designed for knowledge discovery in big dynamic data collections, including texts in natural language. Cordiet-FCA allows one to compose ontology-controlled queries and outputs concept lattice, implication bases, association rules, and other useful concept-based artifacts. Efficient algorithms for data preprocessing, text processing, and visualization of results are discussed. Examples ...
