Immunity to Chaos: How Personal Resources Help Us Cope with the Challenges of a Turbulent World
International conflicts, crises and digital overload—the modern world puts our minds to the test every day. Traditional psychology often focuses on the consequences: anxiety, depression, and psychosomatic disorders. But what if we looked at the problem differently—through the lens of the resources that prevent us from breaking down? Psychological immunity is precisely this set of resources. Alena Zolotareva and her group, Psychological Immunity as a Resource for Positive Functioning, are developing an integrative model of this phenomenon, adapting diagnostic tools and preparing for large-scale empirical research. Why do psychologists need to collaborate with medical professionals, and how could their research transform preventive care in clinics and corporations?

How to Assess Students Knowledge in the Age of AI
A researcher at HSE University has proposed a flowchart to help lecturers decide how to assess students who use artificial intelligence. It shows where the use of AI should be restricted and where it can be incorporated into the learning process. The article has been published in IT Professional.

‘Balkan Hospitality Opens Doors: Studying Dialects on the Verge of Extinction
You cannot study spoken dialects from books. Instead, you need to go to a village, seek out its elders, and earn the trust of local residents before you can record hours of spontaneous stories. This is how Natalia Muravleva, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities, conducts her research. Her internship in Serbia continued her long-standing study of dialects spoken by Macedonian settlers. In this interview, she discusses how diaspora cultural centres help researchers reach informants, why native speakers need to be interviewed only in their own language (otherwise, as she puts it, they may 'break'), and how a single field season helped her finalise her monograph. She also shares warm memories of autumn in Belgrade and of colleagues with whom grammar can be discussed in three languages at once.

WebSci'18 Proceedings of the 10th ACM Conference on Web Science

NY : ACM, 2018.
Editor-in-chief: H. Akkermans, K. Fontaine, I. Vermeulen, G. Houben, V. de Boer, M. Weber

This year's edition of the WebSci conference (WebSci'18) celebrates the ten year anniversary of the unique conference series where a multitude of disciplines converge in a creative and critical dialogue with the aim of understanding the Web and its impacts.

The WebSci conference brings together researchers from multiple disciplines, like computer science, sociology, economics, information science, anthropology and psychology. Web Science is the emergent study of the people and technologies, applications, processes and practices that shape and are shaped by the World Wide Web. Web Science aims to draw together theories, methods and findings from across academic disciplines, and to collaborate with industry, business, government and civil society, to develop our knowledge and understanding of the Web: the largest socio-technical network in human history.

This year we were very pleased to receive 113 submissions for the regular research track. Given the high quality of submissions, it has been a hard job to decide which of the contributions to select for the conference. We are grateful for the support of the Program Committee which consisted of 10 senior members and 35 regular members. All PC members worked hard, based on which we could select an interesting, varied, exciting program comprising 30 long and 15 short papers.

Internet Regulation Media Coverage in Russia: Topics and Countries
Shirokanova A., Silyutina O., , in: WebSci'18 Proceedings of the 10th ACM Conference on Web Science.: NY: ACM, 2018. P. 359–363.
Russia first introduced Internet regulation in 2012 with site blockings and then progressed to personal data retention and ban on VPNs. This makes an interesting case because online media had spread and established a parallel political agenda in Russia in the 2000s, before the onset of regulations. The focus of this study is the contents ...

Continuously pleated torus or strange nonchaotic attractors seen as continuously fractalized quasiperiodic attractors
Letellier C., Stankevich N., Houri S. et al., Chaos 2026 Vol. 36 No. 9 Article 093128
Toroidal chaos designates a chaotic solution that is structured in the neighborhood of a torus. For being chaotic, such a torus needs to be discontinuously fractalized to present a Cantor set, ensuring the great sensitivity to initial conditions required for chaos. A fractal is related to self-similarity and a non-integer dimension. In fact, although clearly ...

Political polarisation and democratic backsliding: Moldova’s Paradox
Gipsman M., Ivanov D., Rosenberg D., Third World Quarterly 2026 P. 1–23
Moldova has been prone to socio-political polarisation due to historical, ethno-linguistic, and geopolitical factors. However, portraying modern Moldova as being torn between the West and the East oversimplifies the case. In Moldova, socio-political polarisation is indeed on the rise, but for the most part it is moderate rather than extreme, and the major fault lines ...

This paper examines the relation-ship between gender attitudes and subjec-tive well-being, focusing on life satisfaction as its core indicator. It covers both individual and country-level gender attitudes and tests whether a mismatch between them affects in-dividual well-being. The analysis draws on the 7th wave of the World Values Survey, covering 55 countries. Gender attitudes are captured ...

Vague stimulating ideas, images and metaphors in scientific thinking: researchers' work with horizons of unclear knowledge
Poddiakov A., / Series Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026. No. 7437658.
Clarity of knowledge and reasoning is necessary in many cases. Yet vagueness in scientific thinking related to surprise, curiosity, "ability to engage with not-knowing" (de Freitas) and abductive reasoning is also a crucially important source of scientific creativity which supplements combinatorial logic when dealing with the already known. Starting from studies by C. S. Peirce ...

Semi-fragile image watermarking: A comprehensive survey, classification, and research directions
Melman A., Evsyutin O., Computer Science Review 2027 Vol. 63 (A) Article 101066
One of the effective means of protecting digital images is invisible watermarking. Different scenarios have different requirements for watermark resistance to post-processing. Robust watermarking schemes are resistant to a wide range of modifications. Fragile watermarking schemes are designed for integrity control and are destroyed by even minor modifications of images. Semi-fragile watermarking schemes combine features ...
