The article is devoted to the severe winter 1777-8, which American army had to spend in Valley Forge. Сonditions of life is the main interest. Scantily dressed soldiers had to build huts and then live in them. Meager food was one more problem for commander-in-chief. The situation was aggravated by distrust to G. Washington after his three defeats during autumn of 1777. A significant role in solving everyday problems played women – campfollowers, which were forced by economic and military circumstances to seek refuge in a military camp, because they had nowhere else to go. They washed, sewed, cooked, looked after ill and wounded soldiers. Women from surrounding farms brought products to the camp. Also officer’s and general’s wives arrived to the camp, but they treated to staying in the camp as to winter seasons - the time for formal receptions, dinners and dances.
