HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

Agreement feature processing is one of the core issues of psycholinguistics. Previous studies mainly focused on number and gender features and obtained controversial results: in some studies, gender was more salient in processing, while in others number was more salient. The studies relied on different languages, used different constructions and different methods. The goal of ...

Comparing Large Language Models for Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis of Student Experience from Russian-Language Online Course Reviews
Kalicheva V., Kirina M., , in: Speech and Computer. 28th International Conference, SPECOM 2026, Ohrid, North Macedonia, September 17–18, 2026, Proceedings, Part I.: Springer, 2027. P. 320–337.
The rapid expansion of the online education market has produced large volumes of unstructured data—course reviews containing detailed evaluations of specific educational components. Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) makes it possible to move from a holistic assessment of the educational experience to an analysis of its individual constituents, identifying particular aspects of learning and students’ attitudes ...

Constructions Built of Constructions: Intensified Comparatives
Zhukova V., Ekaterina Rakhilina, Akhapkina Y., Zeitschrift fur Slawistik 2026 Vol. 71 No. 2 P. 259–284
This study examines the most numerous type of construction presented in the Russian Constructicon, namely intensifiers. We studied intensifiers in the context of comparative constructions of inequality like Х bol’še Y‘X is bigger than Y’ –> Х gorazdo bol’še Y‘X is much bigger than Y’. Comparative constructions and intensifiers are usually studied separately since they ...

Сервисы автоматического распознавания речи на русском языке: исследование качества и инклюзивности на примере датасета RuAphasiaBank
Kolmogorova A., Явшиц Е.

The article addresses the problem of selecting and systematizing data for the study of pronunciation variation in contemporary Russian and proposes a solution in the form of a specialized database of codified equivalent pronunciation variants (e.g., simmétriya / simmetríya “symmetry”). The article presents a methodology for identifying, selecting, and organizing such variants into a database. ...

Russian Pronouns with Focus Antecedents: Coreference and Binding in Corpora
Tiskin D., Компьютерная лингвистика и интеллектуальные технологии 2026 No. 24 P. 656–665
Despite a lot of interest for the factors influencing the choice of pronoun (reflexive or personal) with an antecedent in Russian, the role of the anaphotic relation—coreference or semantic binding—has been understudied, including disagreements as to the acceptability of particular data points. To clarify things, I employ large corpora (Araneum and GICR) to study the ...

Juxtapositional vs. possessive-like encoding in Russian specificational constructions
Skripka N., Russian linguistics 2026 Vol. 50 Article 11
This paper presents the first in-depth corpus-based study of a previously overlooked syntactic variation in Russian: the competition between juxtapositional (Nominative) and possessive-like (Genitive) encoding of the second noun (the term) in specificational constructions (e.g., ponjatie čest’ (notion.NOM honor.NOM) vs. ponjatie česti (notion.NOMhonor.GEN) ‘the notion of honor’). While typological research has established cross-linguistic preferences for one encoding strategy over another, intralinguistic variation ...
