Ukrainian and Belorussian sources of the first half of the XVIIth century (Ivan Vyshensky’s and Zakhariya Kopystenskij’s polemical writings, documents from B. Khmelnyckiy’s circle, some other texts) show that in many cases the notion “Orthodox” was rendered by the term “Russian”; this paradox is related, most likely, to the fact, that in the Orthodox culture of Eastern Europe the confessional discourses were conflicting with discourses of “ethnic” identity.
