Formation of New Criticism in Great Britain and the USA - from critical essays of A.A. Richards, E. Pound, T.S. Eliot in 1920s to the key works of „neocritics‟ of the American South: J.C. Ransom, C. Brooks, A. Tate, R.P. Warren are considered in the paper. An attempt to estimate the place of New Criticism in the literary theory of the XX century has been made. Having conducted the research the author comes to the conclusion that New Criticism was a bridge between traditional and postmodernist approaches to literary analysis, a preliminary stage and a part of poststructuralism and deconstruction.
