Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Arefieva V., Galaktionova E., Saraikin V.,
Urban and rural households spend more than a third of their total monetary income on food. Diets are an important indicator of the economic status of rural and urban households. For this reason, comparison of such indicators as the frequency of consumption of basic foodstuffs, the purchasing power of average per capita monetary income of ...

Nonparametric estimation of the service time distribution in the M/G/∞ queue
Goldenshluger A., Advances in Applied Probability 2016 Vol. 48 No. 4 P. 1117–1138
The subject of this paper is the problem of estimating the service time distribution of the M/G/∞ queue from incomplete data on the queue. The goal is to estimate G from observations of the queue-length process at the points of the regular grid on a fixed time interval. We propose an estimator and analyze its ...

The M/G/∞ estimation problem revisited
Goldenshluger A., Bernoulli: a journal of mathematical statistics and probability 2018 Vol. 24 No. 4A P. 2531–2568
The subject of this paper is the M/G/∞ estimation problem: the goal is to estimate the service time distribution G of the M/G/∞ queue from the arrival–departure observations without identification of customers. We develop estimators of G and derive exact non-asymptotic expressions for their mean squared errors. The problem of estimating the service time expectation is addressed ...

Heterogeneity of sellers in housing market: difference in pricing strategies
Ozhegov E. M., Sidorovikh A., Journal of Housing Economics 2017 Vol. 37 P. 42–51
The present study analyzes Perm, Russia residential housing market supply focusing on sellers' heterogeneity. Many indicators of heterogeneity were consi- dered in the previous research, and all of them were proved to have a great impact on housing prices and time on the market. However, the gap exists in evaluating sellers’ pricing strategies in dynamics ...

Pattern Classification with the Probabilistic Neural Networks Based on Orthogonal Series Kernel
Savchenko A., Lecture Notes in Computer Science 2016 Vol. 9719 P. 505–512
Probabilistic neural network (PNN) is the well-known instance-based learning algorithm, which is widely used in various pattern classification and regression tasks, if rather small number of instances for each class is available. The known disadvantage of this network is its insufficient classification computational complexity. The common way to overcome this drawback is the reduction techniques ...

As in all of Russia’s earlier economic crises, wage flexibility has become the main mechanism of the labor market’s adaptation to the current crisis. As a result of the high rate of inflation observed in late 2014 – early 2015, real wages dropped by 9.5%, although nominal wages remained unchanged. The considerable reduction in labor ...

Do sequel movies really earn more than non-sequels? Evidence from the US box office
Ozhegov E. M., Orlov D., / Series "Working paper series". 2016. No. AWP - 03 - 2016.
Motion pictures industry has been under research from social scientists for the last 30 years. A lot of the work has been dedicated to the analysis of the sequel effect on film revenue. The current paper employs data on wide releases in the US from 2010 to 2014 and provides a new look at sequel ...

Anisimova A., Larin A. V.,

Larin A. V., Anisimova A.,
In this article we investigate nominal wage rigidity in Russia for the period from 2001 to 2012. The importance of wage rigidity for the financial policy of a firm is defined by the fact that this concept explains why firms do not decrease wages even if its environment asks for that decrease. The novelty of ...

Downward Nominal Wage Rigidity: Unions’ Merit Or Firms’ Foresight?
Larin A. V., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series WP BRP "Economics/EC". 2014. No. WP BRP 86/EC/2014.
This paper investigates the sources of the downward nominal wage rigidity in Russia. The empirical analysis is based on the RLMS-HSE household survey from 2004 to 2013. We show that, in spite of weak labor unions in Russia, the extent of downward nominal wage rigidity is high. Moreover, the probability of a wage freeze is ...

The research focuses on empirical estimates of what Russians think about everyday corruption in Russia. We use LITS, WVS and RLMS-HSE data sets. It was discovered concave dependence of corruption expectations on age and positive on income. Level of education and town habitation increase confidence in necessity of bribes. Retrospective questions confirm that corruption did ...
