The article shows the results of the project “Social Networks and their influence on Russian adolescents”. The rapid development of social media technologies transformed the way of teenagers’ participation in this virtual communication. Since the advent of Social networking sites, they have been considered as a separate and isolated space of communication. Today, due to the development of mobile technology, face-to-face and online communication happens simultaneously, and these are indistinguishable processes for adolescents. Penetration of the online communication into the everyday lives of schoolchildren occurs against a background of complete disregard by the compulsory education system, despite the educational potential of social networks. This study has identified a new, the third, wave of education informatization, coming not from the top down (from the state goals of school computerization to the modifications on the level of an educational organization) as the previous two waves in the 1980s and 2000s, but from users, i.e. students as owners of mobile devices, to the formal structures. The system of education was not ready for such a situation that resulted in unjustified and easily violated prohibitions, and, as a consequence, in the aggravation of alienation from the school.
