The 'Second Shift' Is Not Why Women Avoid News
Women are more likely than men to avoid political and economic news, but the reasons for this behaviour are linked less to structural inequality or family-related stress than to personal attitudes and the emotional perception of news content. This conclusion was reached by HSE researchers after analysing data from a large-scale survey of more than 10,000 residents across 61 regions of Russia. The study findings have been published in Woman in Russian Society.

This article contributes to current discussions on state capacity, quality of institutions, and political regimes. An explanatory model of ...

Herr des Hügels Stabilität und Fragilität postsowjetischer Regime
Andrei Melville, Osteuropa 2014 No. 8 P. 121–130
Unlike democracies, autocracies can be stable only if they satisfy the population's material expectations. To that end, they need effective state institutions. This confronts an autocratic ruler with a dilemma: such institutions endanger the nontransparent  distribution of resources to the powerful elites, who support the regime. Therefore, autocracies are also extremely vulnerable to upheavals in the global ...
